Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
02/01/2014
This delightful coffee-table book is beautifully illustrated with over 200 color images representing the art deco period. German art historian Wolf (Albrecht Dürer; The Art of the Salon) has meticulously researched, defined, and cataloged the history of art deco design, deftly tracing the origins, influences, and contemporary art movements that influenced the development of this style that so represented the period between the two world wars. If any fault can be found, it is his focus on paintings of the period with much less attention to iconic art deco architecture and furnishings. Admittedly, most of us think Chrysler Building or Miami when we hear the term art deco. But, in fact, other art forms were influenced by the movement. There are some lovely illustrations by artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Edward Hopper, neither of whom immediately comes to mind when thinking of this movement. Other artists included are painters Dodo and Tamara de Lempicka and sculptor Rudolf Belling. VERDICT This beautiful book is well worth seeing but destined primarily for the shelves of large art history collections.—Sandra Knowles, South Carolina State Lib., Columbia
