Editorial Reviews

Ray Olson
Although its official occupant, whoever he is, usually commands the hearty disrespect of two-thirds to three-quarters of enfranchised Americans (most of whom didn't even vote "against" him), there "are" some White House residents to take pride in. For, not counting prints, there are some 450 works of art in the executive mansion's collection. Among them are sterling paintings by Bingham, Kensett, Church, Bierstadt, Sargent, Eakins, Hassam, and Marin, to cite some famous Americans, and by Monet and Cezanne, to mention two of the few but first-rate Europeans represented, and excellent castings of Remington's bronzes "The Bronco Buster" and "Comin' through the Rye". This luxurious album showcases nearly 100 pieces, each the only occupant of a full page and accompanied by a generous annotation. Before the artworks is a precis of the White House collection's history; after them, a black-and-white catalog of White House paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. A fine addition to museum and single collection monographs that's also good browsing for driving away the election-year blues.
