Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As children are being introduced to art, it is important to make note that artistic expression comes in many forms from many different materials. It is also important to convey that this is an activity that human beings have chosen to do for millennia. Photographs of twenty-six pieces of art are accompanied by text that describes a quality of the artwork. A Calder mobile is art that moves. A Bearden collage is art that is pasted. A Jackson Pollack painting is art that is drizzled. The collection includes, among other things, a suite of armor, a musical instrument, a quilt, a rug and a lamp. The artwork ranges in period from 15,000 B.C. to modern day. The oldest artwork is a cave painting from France. Christo, Jeanne-Clause de Guillebon, Sam Gilliam, Jasper Johns, Robert Indiana and George Segal represent contemporary artists. Notes at the end of the book include a small thumbnail photo of the artwork with more information about the artist and the work illustrated. In a book that has obviously made an effort to be inclusive of a wide range of work, it is a major oversight not to include more examples of non-Western art. 2003, The Millbook Press, Ages 4 to 12.

School Library Journal
K-Gr 5-Raczka introduces more than two dozen famous artworks from various time periods and mediums through quality photographs. His selections are as diverse as a Greek vase, a Bridget Riley Op Art painting, an African mask, a Romare Bearden collage, a Louis Comfort Tiffany lamp, and a Pablo Picasso sculpture, allowing children to compare and contrast these famous pieces and broaden their definition of art. While the text and concepts are appropriate for young children and new readers, the quality of the works depicted makes the book suitable for older readers as well. The eclectic collection is woven together with simple rhyming couplets: "Art is a wall" (Lascaux cave paintings), "Art is a frame holding nothing at all" (Eva Hesse's Hang Up), "Art is an island surrounded by pink" (Christo Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude de Guillebon's Surrounded Islands), "Art is how artists get you to think" (Auguste Rodin's The Thinker). Similar in format to Raczka's No One Saw: Ordinary Things through the Eyes of an Artist (Millbrook, 2002), this volume also contains endnotes giving brief facts about each work and/or the artist who created it. An interesting look at the forms art can take.-Laurie Edwards, West Shore School District, Camp Hill, PA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Highly recommend for teaching elementary art

Great book with ALL mediums and important works are covered in this book. Great to use as exemplars and inspiration for creating art with young people. Great for preperation before visiting an Art Museum as well. Two paintbrushes up!
