Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Walters (philosophy, Gettysburg Coll.; Atheism: A Guide for the Perplexed) here invokes the august memory of the great 17th-century English preacher Jeremy Taylor, whose The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living and The Rule and Exercises of Holy Dying remain classics, as he revisits the lives and experiences of seven notable modern spiritual figures, some world famous (Pope John Paul II), some known to the faithful (Joseph Bernardin, Etty Hillesum, Dietrich Bonhoeffer). Walters's work is a kind of latter-day hagiography, albeit across denominational borders, but his success is uncertain; not all of the figures he selects seem entirely exemplary, and it feels at time reductive to interpret their varied lives as studies for good or righteous deaths. VERDICT These are clearly narrated lives of modern spiritual leaders, from Holocaust Europe to the race-torn South, somewhat unconvincingly unified by the notion of "dying well." Good for pastors and church reading groups.
