How to Train Your Dragon is the story of a scrawny teenaged Viking, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, who lives on the island of Berk in the North Sea. Hiccup is a member of a Viking tribe and wants to make his father, the chief, proud of him. Entering dragon training, Hiccup has a chance to prove his worthiness to his tribe and father. But then, in a world where Dragons and Vikings do not coexist peacefully, Hiccup encounters and ultimately befriends an injured dragon, at which point his world is turned upside down.

The Art of How to Train Your Dragon is a spectacularly designed, full-color insider's guide to the creative process that went into turning Cressida Cowell's popular book into a feature-length, animated film. Featuring more than 350 pieces of development artwork, including early character designs, story sketches, and concept paintings never before released by the studio, the book provides an in-depth look at the process involved in bringing mythical Dragon and Viking worlds to life.

Art of How To Train Your Dragon gets an A+!

If you enjoyed the film as much as I did, then you'll love this book. The book contains hundreds of pieces of art, and they vary from concept art to movie stills. I am a big fan of animated films, so to be able to see the different designs each character went through was amazing. Quotes from the directors and crew are also included, and it is cool to see what the production team was thinking about during the making of the movie. The book is amazing and a must have for How To Train Your Dragon and animation fans.

    Why?

Why would you ask me to review something that is still on backorder?

Good but could have been better.

The book is beautiful, of course it is! But, as an artist it feel it left some parts uncovered. Unlike The Art of Tangled, wich has covered a lot more, this book is like have been invited to an amazing dinner, but suddely you're dispatched without the dessert!
In my opinion it has too many very rough sketches, and storyboards. I'd have loved to see more detailed drawings of the characters, the actual drawings that led to the 3d designers make the characters look like they actually do on the screen, also the different views of them. The other weak point is the lack of attention to environment, you'll see some major settings like some ladscapes but you'll hardly see detailed stuff of the village and it's places. Again, too many very rough sketches along the whole book.
I think some more pages wouldn't have hurt, otherwise, less rough stuff and more polished sketched would have resulted in a better product.

    I Also Recommend:

    Amazing book!!!

WOW!! What an amazing book!!! The pitures where rich, ditaled and amusing, with interesting comments by the directors and artists. I also enjoyed seeing scetches of the caracters in the begining of caracter developement and then what they looked like in the movie. And the painings of the landscapes are truely gorgeous!!! But I just have one little commplaint:well I know Hiccup is the main caracter and in his section he as 40 pics (or rather scetches) but poor Astrid has only 11 or 13 pictures!!! And if one of your favorite characters from the movie is Astrid you might be a little disapointed, like I was. But on a whole this book is sipply wonderful and a must have for all real How To Train Your Dragon fans!!! Also you might want to consider getting the soundtrack to the movie like I did and let my tell you I listen to those songs at least twice a day!!! They are sinply wonderful!!!!
