Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
"The Art of Drawing" series of manuals introduces art students to the tools and materials artists use for drawing, with this volume focusing specifically on pencils. Numerous pages are devoted to understanding drawing basics like hatching and crosshatching with numerous examples of combinations of lines for shading. The instructions are organized by subject matter, beginning with still life arrangements. Individual fruits, vegetables and simple objects are drawn in four steps. Great attention is given to value and texture in these drawings. Buildings are the next subject matter the art student will tackle. The drawings become more complex with each new subject matter. Landscapes are next with most diagrams providing four steps from beginning to end. Vehicles, animals and people are the final subjects. Most of these drawings are very complex and do not have the depth of instruction that the simple objects provided. The illustrations are in black and white since the focus is pencil drawings. These books are written for adults with especially small type but can easily be used by kids who only need to follow the steps of the illustrations to develop their drawing skills.
