American publishers have discovered and translated a trove of art instruction books published by Parramon Ediciones in Barcelona. This book is the latest find, and it's well worth our attention. This beautifully designed volume emphasizes the freedom of sketching as opposed to more formal art techniques; as the text notes, "Making a sketch requires thinking with a pencil, that is, letting the pencil work impulsively and not very rationally, freeing it from the control of the mind." From ballpoint pens to the rich tones of ink washes and color paper, the work offered here is inspiring. If your budget is slim, this is an especially good buy. For a more extensive, and expensive, work see Sarah Simblet's The Sketch Book for the Artist.
