This catalog was published in association with the Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate the opening of its new Greek and Roman galleries and Study Center. Authors Picón, Seàn Hemingway, Christopher S. Lightfoot, Joan R. Mertens, and Elizabeth J. Milleker, all Metropolitan curators, contributed two-page introductions to each time period, including the Neolithic and Aegean Bronze ages, Geometric and Archaic Greece, Classical Greece, Hellenistic Greece, Cyprus ca. 3900 B.C.E.-100 C.E., Etruria ca. 900 B.C.E.-100 C.E., and the Roman Empire. An 11-page history of the Department of Greek and Roman Art by Picón, the department's curator in charge, completes the textual material. But the beauty and primary use of this book lie in the lavish color illustrations of nearly 500 objects from the collection. Included are a two-page layout of the department's new floor plan; an index of artworks; a catalog of and notes on artworks; the concordance of catalog and accession numbers; the table of names of major Greek, Roman, and Etruscan divinities; and seven maps coordinated to each time period. Recommended for larger public, academic, and specialized libraries.
