Intimate memoir of the criminal underground from an atypically blue-collar art thief. Connor was the scion of Mayflower descendants fallen on hard times on one side, the son of an Irish cop on the other, a black sheep to both sets of relatives. Born in 1943, he grew up in Milton, Mass., near Boston. He chafed against New England's strict class divisions, developing in adolescence a rebelliousness that seemed somewhat incongruous with his love of fine art and antiques. Yet Connor suggests that class snobbery propelled him toward his vocation: "The first time I wandered into the Forbes Museum, their contempt was palpable . . . they could tell just by looking that I wasn't one of them." He got even by pulling off his first art-museum robbery at the Forbes in 1965, around the same time he was finding some success playing rock 'n' roll guitar in nightclubs. (The lifestyle of the gangsters he encountered on the club circuit was another factor drawing him to a career in crime.) Connor fancied himself a prodigy, but his brazen crimes brought punishment soon enough; at 22 he was arrested for burglarizing a Maine mansion, but only after shooting at the pursuing officer. He escaped from jail using a soap-bar gun, cementing his reputation in the New England underworld. Tracked down in Boston, he engaged in another extended gun battle and chase. The enraged officers retaliated by beating him severely when they finally cornered him, and by framing him for a series of unsolved rapes, which offended him deeply: "I have always lived by a strong code of ethics when it comes to civilians." The rape conviction was eventually overturned, and he was free to pursue further criminal schemes. In 1975, he stole aRembrandt from Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and used it as a bargaining chip to avoid standing trial for another theft. Meet the Author

Myles J. Connor grew up in Milton, Massachusetts, the son of a decorated policeman. During the 1960s and '70s he was the leader of a successful Boston rock-and-roll band, Myles and the Wild Ones. He robbed his first museum when he was twenty years old. Shortly after, he gained notoriety for his daring escape from a Maine jail, and for his involvement in a dramatic shoot-out with Boston police. Connor has planned and executed numerous bank robberies and museum heists, several of which are told here for the first time.

    A Page-Turner for Art Enthusiasts

    I purchased the eBook version of this book over the summer (on that topic, it translated well with no type errors and the pictures come out clear). It was a great book and a total page turner with no dull moments. It still boggles my mind how this guy lives to tell about all his heists, and is somehow not in jail right now. Rumor has it that they're planning a movie, but since the book is always better, read it now!

    Interesting and unique

    For a topic that is an instant headline grabber, there are very few non-fiction books about art theft, let alone written by the thief themselves. In "The Art of the Heist," Myles Connor shares the story of his life as a musician, bank robbery, and art thief. Connor talks about how he robbed museums and banks, his time in prison, how he used a Rembrandt to negotiate a lesser sentence, and his experience with the legal system. Obviously by telling the story himself, it is a bit more sympathetic than if it had been told by someone else, but this is minimal and he does take responsibility for his crimes. Overall Connor comes off as very likeable and down to earth. It would have been great to have heard a little more about the Gardner heist, if Connor was in fact involved. Since he has never been charged (and was in prison at the time of the heist), it is understandable that he would not publicly discuss any involvement he may have had. I also would have enjoyed seeing a bit more detail about the art thefts themselves, but as a whole "Art of the Heist" is a very interesting and exciting read.

    The Art of the Heist is Intriguing and Fascinating

    The Art of the Heist is a compelling biography about the life of Miles J. Connor, full of excitement and tension. Connor, the son of a prominent Boston police officer, steps outside the shadow of his father, becoming a well-known musician and later a notorious criminal. The stories are so full of adventure they border being confused for fiction. Throughout the entire book, the thin line between right and wrong is put to the test. Connor lays out an interesting set of standards, further distorting moral boundaries. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was full of adventure and action. I particularly enjoyed the unique nature of the novel. Connor reveals the techniques and genius behind many of his crimes. His story is fascinating, and it shows a side of life that generally has a negative connotation. Connor has an interesting set of morals. He has no problem stealing, yet he has a respect for human life, unlike many of the other criminals he comes in contact with. Throughout the book I was entertained and intrigued. The book was fast to action and it kept up for the entire book. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in crime or law. Even to those with less knowledge about the subject, the book would still be interesting.

    Great Heist

    I enjoyed this book completely. I really liked how Connor told all and this let you in to a world most people don't have an idea about. His story of his life was a great read and I have recommended it others.
