Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Martha Sielman has done it again. She has taken a group of beautifully executed art quilts with a strict theme—people and portraits —and created a richly diverse collection that expands the reader's understanding not only of the complexity of portraiture, but also the intricacies of working with fabric as a medium. Sielman's keen eye for detail and expert curation of the subject are evident from the insightful introduction to the last description. The book is divided into seven sections with different themes. Each theme contains profiles of three well-known artists who are particularly adept at expressing the theme, and a gallery of quilts that exposes the reader to a wide variety of artistic styles. As a reference for some of the most beautiful and moving portraiture that has been accomplished in the contemporary fiber world, this book is a must. Be prepared to become lost in the faces, entranced with the expressions, and pulled in by the emotions of these outstanding examples of fine artistry rendered in cloth." —Vivika Hansen DeNegre, Editor, Quilting Arts magazine

In the Art Quilt Portfolio series, Martha Sielman has composed a new book called, "People & Portraits". This new book is just as great as her first book, "The Natural World"! Sielman's books are note-worthy for containing beautiful photographs of quilts that you could look at everyday and never tire of them. "People & Portraits" contains many quilts that are so time and work-involved that no longer look like quilts, unless you are looking closely. There are many representational quilts and many that are symbolic quilts, but one of the artists, Marilyn Belford, has made a quilt titled, "Medea Escaping 2009" that would be a major feat for an oil painter, and a challenge just by size alone, at 81 1/2" x 102 1/2". This quilt must contain thousands of pieces. There are many quilts in here that are very artist-worthy.

Another beautifully designed and produced book from Lark!

I have been looking forward to seeing this book. The previous book in this series Art Quilt Portfolio: The Natural World, also by Martha Sielman, was a beauty as well and continues to inspire me. The whole topic of faces in art quilts has long intrigued me and I have definite opinions about how well, or not, our medium is suited to portraying the human face. Over the years I have seen, for me, too many badly rendered faces in cloth--attempts at realism that fell short; computer generated "posterized" images; goofy Picasso-esque monstrosities. Sad to say there are a few of such works included in this book, but really very few. The book, to my delight, is filled with fresh, original takes on the human form and portraiture in cloth. Some were from favorite artists and some from artists entirely new to me. The featured artists are well represented with several pages of photos and text for each. This is a book that I will look at again and again, it is that inspiring.

Martha Sielman has presented another fabulous compilation of inspiring art quilts. This most recent publication profiles a number of major quilt artists of our time.
This edition does not disappoint with the rich colors of the quilt photography. The essays shared by the artists will grab your interest as you admire the details of the fabrics, painting techniques, photo imagery, and the quilting patterns. The range of art quilt styles is refreshing. In this edition you will find abstract, primitive, and the more detailed pictorial expressions for the portraits.

One of the impressive features of this new Art quilt Portfolio is the enlightening amount of information regarding the the artists and the art quilts for the reader. As I read the backstories and the inspirations for the quilts, I felt drawn into the piece. The quilt themes are separated into categories which highlight Happiness, Contemplation, Community, Icons, Family and Friends, Work, and Play.

Art Quilt Portfolio - People & Portraits is a good balance of the creative variety among current quilt artists. The book itself is designed as a convenient size for display or for carrying to meetings at guilds or among friends. A must addition for your art quilt library!
