Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The great failing of this book is that it pretends to discuss the world of art while excluding art from most of the world. With the exception of four Mexican artists and a brief reference to the prehistoric Middle East and Egypt, there are no examples of art from Asia, Africa, Australia, or the rest of Central and South America. Almost as shocking is the assertion that it was unusual for a talented artist to go unrecognized, a rather sweeping statement to cover thousands of years and many thousands of artists. What this collection does include is a large number of beautiful reproductions of art in the Western tradition—from the early cave paintings of Lascaux to the present, and as a compendium of Western Art, this field guide is an exceptional resource. Presented chronologically, the text on each period includes historical references and a brief commentary on the predominant styles of the day. Individual artists are only recognized in the Gothic and Early Renaissance periods. Brief biographies are included with information about the artist's country of birth, where they lived, the media they used, and the most recent sales price of a specific work of art. 2005, DK Publishing, Ages 12 to adult.
