Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
From watercolor pencils to cartoons and computer art, this hands-on volume of the "Super Skills" series focuses on skills that let kids experiment with visual art. Starting with the basics (worktable, paints, pencils, brushes), appealing pages use color photos to display finished work, while drawings demonstrate brushing, splattering, printing, and assembling collages. First come watercolors, great for washes, blurry effects, and textured surfaces. Then it is on to pointillism (kids see Seurat's The Circus), flicking and dropping paint, and making prints with potatoes, sliced fruit, or thumbprints. Experimenting with collage materials looks like fun; even more with photos cut up, pasted, or manipulated on a computer to create Warhol-like images. "Drawing Basics" deals briefly with proportion, perspective, the use of hard and soft pencils and art erasers, though getting some instruction and lots of practice in a sketchbook is what serious artists do. Keeping up with art trends, Turnbull introduces computer-art programs and body painting—warning readers to use only special body paint to design patterns on faces, shoulders, and hands (as in Indian henna decorations). Are there viable careers in art? Visiting galleries and exploring calligraphy, photography, or sculpture (all needing equipment) can lead to exhibiting, finding a style, and ultimately investigating college courses in art and design. Career possibilities for talented artists abound: architect, florist, stonemason, animator, and even makeup artist for film stars or children's book illustrator with studio. Teachers may find this book useful for plans involving art projects, art appreciation, creative thinking, and writers illustrating their own books. Kids might also research other works by artists mentioned, such as Picasso, Braque, or Winslow Homer. A glossary and a list of websites for young art-lovers will help budding artists on their way.
