Overview

More than 115 entries clearly explain the who, what, when, and where of art since 1945. Some entries deal with concepts, such as formalism, multiculturalism, and the picture plane; some discuss specific movements, such as Abstract Expressionism and Fluxus; some describe various ways of making art, such as collage, performance, and video. Together they provide an invaluable key to the specialized, often baffling vocabulary so often used in today's art world. Complementing the entries are two additional noteworthy ...

Together they provide an invaluable key to the specialized, often baffling vocabulary so often used in today's art world. Complementing the entries are two additional noteworthy features. The first, a one-page ArtChart, presents the movements of the postwar years in a concise format that makes their chronological connections immediately visible. The second is a twenty-eight-page timeline - illustrated with full-color reproductions of paintings, sculptures, and installations - that chronicles events in the art world and the world at large, providing a context for the entries that follow, in addition, for this updated and revised edition, birth and death dates for the artists have been added to the index, along with their nationalities, making this easy-to-use reference even more informative.

Introduction

A User's Manual

To the uninitiated, contemporary art can seem as indecipherable as Egyptian hieroglyphics. Gallery- and museum-goers are frequently confronted with a perplexing variety of art, ranging from Arte Povera to Neo-Geo to video installations. Strange terms like semiotics, Outsider art, and appropriation may pierce the decorous hush of a gallery. Even reading about art can be an arduous task, given the jargon-ridden prose favored by so many critics. Ironically, in this era of ever-increasing fascination with contemporary art, interest far exceeds comprehension. Today's art is hard to understand, and that's why contemporary art-like every professional discipline-requires a specialized vocabulary for all but the most rudimentary communication.

ArtSpeak is the key to that specialized vocabulary. It identifies and defines the terminology essential for understanding art made since World War II. That language is made up of art movements, art forms, and critical terms explained here in short, alphabetically arranged essays. Many, but not all, of the entries are divided into the journalistic categories of WHO, WHEN, WHERE, and WHAT.

WHO is a list of the principal artists involved with a movement or art form. Capitalized names indicate the pioneers or virtuosos of that approach. Certain artists appear in several entries. The prodigious German artist Joseph Beuys, for instance, is listed under Action/Actionism, assemblage, Conceptual art, Fluxus, installation, media art, and process art. The nationality and dates for each artist are provided in the index.

WHen signifies the moment of greatest vitality for a particular attitude toward, or method of, art making.Pop art, for example, is associated with the 1960s, but Pop artists continued making Pop art after 1969, and they are likely to continue to do so well into the twenty-first century.

WHere identifies the cities, countries, or continents in which a movement was centered.

WHat defines the nature, origins, and implications of the art movements or art forms. Cross references to other entries are capitalized.

What's the best way to use this volume? That depends on who you are. ArtSpeak has been designed for different kinds of readers. The expert can use it to find specific facts-say, the name of the curator who coined the term New Image painting or the location of the first feminist art program. The student, collector, or casual art buff will find it useful to read the book from beginning to end and then return to it as needed, guidebook fashion.

ArtSpeak's aim is to provide access to contemporary art. Equipped with the necessary vocabulary, viewers will enjoy the stimulation provided by knowledgeable interaction with today's art. What follows that is pure pleasure.
