Overview

This major publication, containing 450 color illustrations, reveals the greatest art treasures of English regional collections, built up from the foundation in the 17th century of the first university collections, through the purchases of Victorian paintings by municipal art galleries and philanthropic patrons in 19th-century industrial towns and cities, to the collecting of Old Master paintings and drawings and modern British art in this century.

The selection of works, including paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures, will be shown at the Royal Academy, London, and represent the finest holdings of Western art in English museums and galleries outside London. There are major works by artists such as Bellini, Raphael, Michelangelo, Canaletto, Courbet, Millais, Holman Hunt, Franz Marc, Stanley Spencer, and Francis Bacon, and by lesser-known figures, many unfamiliar, some famous but seldom seen.

Illustrated in full color throughout, the book charts the development of the collections themselves, the ethos and passions behind each collector and his legacy, and the part played by art dealers of the time. A complete gazeteer of the 100 galleries and museums represented offers an invaluable tour guide.
