Editorial Reviews

London Times
In October I called it a minor classic. Let's change that to classic comedy, period.
Newsweek
...a nonstop cross-fire of crackling language, serious issues of life and art expressed in outbursts that sound like Don Rickles with a degree from the Sorbonne...Reza is a fiendishly clever writer...'ART' sounds like a marriage of Molière and Woody Allen...
Independent (London)
Anyone looking for a play that is funny, sophisticated, stylish, stimulating and moving should go to 'ART'.
NY Post
...wildly funny, naughtily provocative...
Mail (London)
That such a simple plot can throw up such profound and meaty ideas about the rules that dictate art and friendship is a real treat. Reza and Hampton have an acute ear for the idiocies, trivia and petty assaults that pepper the conversation between friends...The real pleasures come from Reza's creation of three beautifully defined, original characters...
Publishers Weekly
Accomplished actors star in this slick, highly entertaining full production of Reza’s award-winning play. Three old friends—Serge (Balaban), Marc (Cox), and Yvan (Perry)—find themselves at odds when Serge purchases an exorbitantly expensive all-white painting. Drudging up old resentments, critiquing the white canvas and their personal relationships, and finally speaking to each other with complete candor, the three friends battle it out while exploring the value and meaning of art and friendship. The entire cast delivers stellar performances, with Cox offering a particularly memorable turn as the petulant Marc in a smart, stylish audiobook that’s a quick listen to boot. (Nov.)

    Dysfunctional friendships//not all that funny

Frankly this play relates rather unrealistic dysfunctional friendships among 3 guys. Their relationship to each other is sad, and hardly funny. A few funny lines here and there, but overall it is an 'emperor's new clothes' play: because it was on Broadway, people feel thay have to say they thought it was funny.

    Just like the painting

Even though this play is funny, how a piece of moden art can destroy 3 friends that have been friends for 15 odd years, the story line is as dull as the plan white canvas, which Marc sums up to be 'a piece of s**t'..... I would have to agree

'Art' most colorful character relationship !!

An enjoyable read, but a must see! The play is a wonderfully intergrated character study between 3 friends whose personal opinions differ. Each friend is fulled with complexities, depth & COLOR. Something from each of these character's can hit a tender spot within each of us. That makes it so real & amusing to watch at the same time.

    I'm Still Laughing!!!

I think this is such a wonderfully written play that it is even enjoyable just to read. You don't have to see it up on it's feet...but it does help a bit. Beautifully written characters that together, with their own different quirks, tear apart Life itself by examining a peice of canvas 'Painted white, with white diagonal lines' on it. I LOVE IT!!!!!!
