Meet the Author

Eoin Colfer
Eoin Colfer
In the summer of 2001, Eoin Colfer was a teacher in Ireland who had just finished up a book called Artemis Fowl -- about a boy in search of fairy gold. Colfer struck gold himself when his high-tech fairy tale starring the intrepid 12-year old "criminal mastermind" became a blockbuster bestseller that many considered to be the heir apparent to Harry Potter.

Biography

Eoin Colfer is a former elementary school teacher whose Artemis Fowl series has become an international bestseller. He is also the author of The Legend of Spud Murphy, The Wish List, and the New York Times bestseller The Supernaturalist. He lives in Ireland with his wife and two children.

Good To Know

Some fun and fascinating outtakes from our interview with Colfer:

"My original ambition was to be a comic book artist. I would still love to write a comic one day."

"I have a real hatred of queues. If I see a queue of more than four people, I will leave the building and come back another day."

"I have four brothers and they are the inspiration for several of the sprites and gremlins in my books."

"I did a parachute jump recently and loved it. I would definitely take it up as a hobby if we had more clear sky over here in Ireland."

"I am a big theatre fan, and I go as often as possible with my wife. I actually started out in the theatre, writing plays for my actor friends."

    Not Just For Children

I had always been told to read Artemis Fowl by my friends. I never got around to it and after enough time passed, I felt too old to read it. That was, until I received the boxed set as a gift from my beloved girlfriend. I gave the first book a shot and enjoyed the read very much. The other books were flawless sequels that I also enjoyed. My only real complaints are the books are very easy to read and don't require much attention. Plus, the characters are somewhat childish, but fun all the same. I am a senior in high school and I very much enjoyed every book in the series. Oh and by the way, there are two major plot twists in the storyline that caught me very off guard...

    My favorite series!

I really enjoy reading the Artemis Fowl series, and I would have to say that they are my favorite books. The series itself is engaging and imaginative, and is a good fit for anybody who likes a good read with a lot of adventure and fantasy. Mr. Colfer is a wonderful writer, I love all his work, and the characters are colorful and original. The plots always surprise me, and I never quite know what will happen next. I absolutely love it. Go Artemis!

My 12 yr old son just finished it for his summer reading. He loves action adventure and thrilling stories. He now is reading a book called, Smitty's Cave Adventures and really likes that book too! Good summer reading material.

    Not Just For Kids!

I've read all of the Artemis Fowl books and have passed them on to my nephews. These books are full of fantasy, intrigue, and lessons in morality, and though they're popular with tweens, they're great reading for adults as well. I recently bought the set for coworker as a retirement gift (we both loved the Harry Potter books!), and I was a little worried that he might not find Artemis to be quite as appealing as I did, but after he read the first one he called to say the book was great and he was looking forward to reading the next one! I highly recommend this series for parents and children alike.

    Adults Do Read

As a lover of fiction, especially fantasy, I thought this was a very good read. I have read all six books (actually more than once) and find that even as an adult, the story line was truly enjoyable. With a hint of old schools Encyclopedia Brown wit, Nancy Drew mystery and Harry Potter "charm", this book series sweeps your mind into another world yet holds one leg in our own.

    I Need More

I finished reading all 3 books for the hundredth time, and I'm on Artemis Fowl deprivation. I need More. I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, but nothing is as funny, smart, and creative as Artemis Fowl.

And I thought Harry Potter was good!

All three Colfer master-peices are an outstanding read from page 1-277 I was on the edge of my seat. The characters that in the book are funny, smart, magical, and dont forget above all crimimal master minds. This is a great read for ages 9 to 90. Artemis Fowl can give the image to fairies that Harry Potter gave to wizardry. If you havent read them than what are you waiting for its not like the books are going to magic there way to your doorstep but then again you never know what will happen next with these stories.

Artemis Fowl, better than Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings combined

Artemis Fowl and Artemis Fowl: The Artic Incident are the best books I have ever read. The Artemis Fowl series are the best books in the world! Once I started reading it I could not put it down, I read the whole first book in just one day, I liked it so much. I just finished the Prolouge and Chapter 1 of the second Artemis Fowl series Artemis Fowl: The Artic Incident.

    Excellent Books

Any one of the Artemis Fowl trilogy books are some of my favorite. I found myself saying, over and over again, 'Just one more chapter, then I'll put it down,' which I didn't. =) Colfer lets you see through the eyes of different characters - for example, on one page you might be in England with Artemis, and on the next you could be in the core of the earth with Holly and the other People. Highly recommended for ages 9 and up.
