Overview

In 2001, audiences first met and fell in love with a twelve-year-old criminal mastermind named Artemis Fowl. Since then, the series has sold over seven million copies in the United States alone. Now, this phenomenally successful series is being translated into a graphic novel format. Eoin Colfer has teamed up with established comic writer Andrew Donkin to adapt the text. For the first time, rabid fans will be able to see what Foaly’s tin hat looks like; discover just how “Beet” Root got his name; and of course, follow their favorite criminal mastermind as he plots and connives in action-packed, full-color panels.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
It was only a matter of time and artistic genius for Artemis Fowl to emerge in full graphic splendor. Master illustrator Andrew Donkin has conjured up an Artemis worthy of the young criminal mastermind's reputation. Irish author Eoin Colfer has adapted the text to this new medium, heightening its crowd-pleasing effect.
Children's Literature
Artemis Fowl fans will not be disappointed with this graphic adaptation of the popular character from the series by the same name. A brief prologue introduces Artemis and provides the back story for unfamiliar readers. Fans may find it difficult to change their own visual images of the characters in this book as they are brought to life now on the printed page; they may gain some comfort in knowing that Fowl’s original creator was involved in this project, too. The underground fairy world, Fooly’s inventions and Fowl manor are brought to life, as well. The storyline stays true to the plot of the original book, and characters remain the same. The colors of the book are visually appealing, though the frames and text are small. The text size may be too small for some readers. This book is going to be a hit with Fowl fans and is sure to bring the reluctant reader to this fascinating fantasy series. Reviewer: Sue Reichard

Gr 5 Up
Adapted from the fantasy book of the same name, this graphic novel is beautifully illustrated and should prove an enjoyable read to fans and newbies alike. Diabolical 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl is troubled by his father's disappearance, his mother's descent into madness, and the depletion of the family wealth. Determined to solve at least one of these problems, he hatches a brilliant plan to crack the secrets of the fairy world. Excellent use of color and shading gives the panels a tremendous sense of light with enchanting effect. Characters are expressively brought to life with fun, exaggerated style. A great addition is the inclusion of "files" from the fairy police force, with mug shots of criminals/monsters.

Meet the Author

Eoin Colfer
Eoin Colfer
In the summer of 2001, Eoin Colfer was a teacher in Ireland who had just finished up a book called Artemis Fowl -- about a boy in search of fairy gold. Colfer struck gold himself when his high-tech fairy tale starring the intrepid 12-year old "criminal mastermind" became a blockbuster bestseller that many considered to be the heir apparent to Harry Potter.

Biography

Eoin Colfer is a former elementary school teacher whose Artemis Fowl series has become an international bestseller. He is also the author of The Legend of Spud Murphy, The Wish List, and the New York Times bestseller The Supernaturalist. He lives in Ireland with his wife and two children.

Good To Know

Some fun and fascinating outtakes from our interview with Colfer:

"My original ambition was to be a comic book artist. I would still love to write a comic one day."

"I have a real hatred of queues. If I see a queue of more than four people, I will leave the building and come back another day."

"I have four brothers and they are the inspiration for several of the sprites and gremlins in my books."

"I did a parachute jump recently and loved it. I would definitely take it up as a hobby if we had more clear sky over here in Ireland."

"I am a big theatre fan, and I go as often as possible with my wife. I actually started out in the theatre, writing plays for my actor friends."

    Awesome!!

If you are a huge Artemis Fowl fan like myself, you were really excited to hear about the graphic novel of our favorite criminal mastermind. This graphic novel exceeded my expectations and explained every detail of the first novel perfectly. The images are well-drawn and accurate, and the quotes and narrative was almost like the novel.I enjoyed seeing my favorite characters drawn out and can't wait for the next graphic novel.

    Very impressed!

I was a little leery about reading the Graphic Novel version of Artemis Fowl at first. As a avid fan of the books, I was afraid that it would be strange to see all of my favorite characters in graphic format. But, as I picked up the book and started reading it, I was surprised. I really enjoyed it! The art is great and the color is wonderful, and I think that everyone working on this project was really able to capture and stay true to the story. A must have for any fan.

A Masterpiece of Words and Art!

In 2001, a wonderful thing happened. A book called "Artemis Fowl," by Eoin Colfer was published and won the hearts of many readers. In 2007, another wonderful thing took place. "Artemis Fowl" was reborn in a graphic novel, the whole first book cut down into comic. "Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel," adapted by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin, with art by Giovanni Rigano, and color by Paolo Lamanna, was very hard to put together, but is now a masterpiece of words and art that readers will not want to ever put down!

    Pretty...AWESOME!

I am a person who loves graphic novels. Manga and stuff like that. This one tops my list on graphic novel. Now I know how Eoin Colfer depicted Artemis! But when I opened the page I almost died laughing! It looked like Artemis was so angry! Like someone stepped on his dog or something! All and all it was good.

Didn't like the art, but faithful to the books

I won this as a prize, but it didn't meet expectations. The art was overdone and somewhat disturbing. My friend died of laughter when he saw what Butler and Foaly looked like. The panels were too bland and got me bored after looking at repetitive square panels. The color schemes were great, though

    Fans of Artemis Will Approve

Graphic novels aren't for everyone. In a growing genre, the marriage of a beloved book series with the graphic format can be as risky as putting it on the big screen, especially a book series as fantastic as Artemis Fowl. The books have such incredibly written worlds and characters that the readers will definitely have their own opinions about how things should be. Therefore it is with great pleasure that I can report to those Artemis fans that this graphic novel delivers. It is a faithful representation of the storyline and enhances the imagery and characterization rather than rewriting. Well done!

    Book vs. Graphic novel

The book is about Artemis Fowl, a boy evil genius who not only wants to find out where the fairies live, but wants to save his dad (who has been gone for years) and mother (who is mentally ill). Then there is Molly Short, our fairy, who meets up with Artemis and his evil plans. The graphic novel and the book are similar but there is one difference I would like to point out. The book you get to imagine what the characters look like, while the graphic novel you see them. I pictured all the characters a lot differently then it was illustrated from the graphic novel. I felt like they stayed true to the book, but I enjoyed reading the book then the actually graphic novel.

ARTEMIS FOWL : NEW HARRY POTTER??

Artemis fowl ROCKS! best--ONE of the best books ive read. This kid could take over for harry potter. and coming from me, that means something. at first, i was a bit apprehensive, 'i was big on the HP bandwagon' but when i read it, i was hooked. Artemis has everything a book needs. action, adventure, humor, suspense, and originality. i LOVE that just because the book uses magic as one of its key points, it doesn't use it in the same way J.K rowling does. this is an AWESUMELY AWESOME book, and i cant wait 2 get the graphic novel.
