Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This DVD, the newest in the series, Masters Experience in Arthroscopic Surgical Techniques coproduced by the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, is dedicated to hip arthroscopy and guides users from fundamentals through complex interventions.
Purpose: The goal is to provide an independent study program that will advance users along the learning curve of hip arthroscopy. In this field, visuals are everything and the high quality external and internal arthroscopy videos serve to bring users into the operating room.
Audience: The target audience includes orthopedic surgeons in training or practice who wish to add hip arthroscopy to their surgical armamentarium or wish to improve their hip arthroscopy skills. Dr. Byrd is a world renowned expert in the field and a wonderful teacher. As editor, he has brought together the most impressive hip arthroscopists in the world to serve as master instructors for this mini fellowship.
Features: The two DVDs walk users from operating setup, including various styles, through foundational anatomy and basic arthroscopy and portals, to the highest level of interventional hip arthroscopy. The video quality is exemplary and the narration is by the master instructor, which makes users feel as if they were actually in the presence of the master.
Assessment: Dr. Byrd has done a most impressive job of creating a mini-fellowship in hip arthroscopy with these two DVDs. The contributors include the who's who of hip arthroscopy including Thomas Sampson, Carlos Guanche, Mark Phillipon and others - I would be proud to dedicate a year of study in a fellowship with any one of them. I went through the entire program from start to finish the first time I popped it in, as the video quality was so high and the information so valuable. I am sure my next hip scope will be more successful after reviewing these disks. Thanks to Dr. Byrd for creating a great product and helping me take care of my patients.
