Author Biography:

Lillian Hoban's books for children have been working magic for nearly thirty years. Her illustrations can help change an unfamiliar setting-like a museum filled with dinosaurs and whales-into a wondrous adventure, and her words and pictures together can transform chimpanzees and badgers into very real companions for the youngest reader.

Ms. Hoban was born and raised in Philadelphia. Among the first books she illustrated were the ever-popular "Frances" books, and several years later she wrote and illustrated Arthur's Christmas Cookies, thereby ushering in her beloved 'Arthur" series.

In 1967 Ms. Hoban was asked to illustrate Will I Have a Friend? by Miriam Cohen. It was the beginning of an enormously popular collaboration that produced more that a dozen books about Jim, Paul, Danny, Anna Maria, and the rest of the first-grade classcharacters as familiar to children as their own classmates.

Perhaps the key to the unfailing popularity of Ms. Hoban's stories and illustrations is that she's long been a keen observer of children, having had firsthand experience raising four of her own.

Lillian Hoban lives in Connecticut.

While hurrying to get on the school bus, Arthur and his friend unknowingly switch their lunchboxes; later Arthur finds out what surprise his sister had put into hers.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
It is the first day of school and Arthur and his sister Violet are waiting for the bus. Arthur has his new purple and red lunch box packed with all kinds of interesting things for lunch. Arthur's pal, Norman, has a new lunch box too and his is purple and red. Norman's dog Bubbles carries Norman's lunch box. When the bus arrives, the children excitedly jump in, but Norman has forgotten to get his lunch box from Bubbles. The bus driver, ever mindful of children's safety, will not stop the bus but urges the children to sit down in their seats. The children see Bubbles chasing the bus with Norman's lunch box in his mouth. The adventure that ensues leaves Norman's lunch scattered all over the road. Arthur, Violet and Norman spend the first morning at school learning all the safety rules for riding the bus. Lunchtime and the afternoon bring some unexpected surprises to all the children. This delightful story will teach some valuable lessons about school safety. Parents will enjoy this "I Can Read Book" because the presentation is reminiscent of the Dick and Jane series of long ago.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3The engaging little chimp is back for his 10th adventure. This time Arthur and his sister, Violet, are waiting for the school bus when Norman arrives with a lunch box exactly like Arthur's. After some excitement on the bus and at school (where school-bus safely rules are discussed), it is finally time for a snack. Arthur and Norman have inadvertently switched lunch boxes and Arthur's cookies are gone. In classic heartwarming style, Violet shares her cookies and they all have a great first day of school. The soft-focused, warm watercolors will be recognized by Hoban's many fans. The topic is timeless and of great appeal to this age group. The characters may be welcomed back or met for the first time. A surefire selection for the first day of school.Sharon R. Pearce, San Antonio Public Library, TX
