Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
With usual brother and sister rivalry, D.W. and Arthur have a bet. D.W. believes that she can teach baby sister Kate to read. Arthur of course says that she cannot, and the loser of the wager will have to change Kate's diapers. D.W. has an idea: she uses her paper and crayons to write out words that match objects that baby Kate will recognize. She would point to the word, hold up the object, and Kate would say the word. She is thrilled and calls her mother to come and see Kate read. Mother knows that Kate is just naming the objects that she sees. When D.W. tries to conceal the objects and show Arthur that Kate can read, he soon realizes what is going on and his sister loses the bet. It is a cute story and will be easy for kids to relate to. This is a Level 3 book in the "Step into Reading" series for kids reading on their own. In addition to a note to parents, there is also an activity: stickers that kids can use to create their own stories. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
