Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Arthur may be facing his toughest challenge yet when he ends up with Mr. Ratburn for his third grade teacher. Rumors surround the man``Make one wrong move and he puts you on death row,'' and ``He's a vampire.'' All Arthur knows is that he has homework on the first day of school. His pesty sister, D. W., reminds Arthur that she won't have homework next year in kindergarten. The teacher announces a spelling test; the winners will go on to a school spellathon. Arthur works harder than he ever has, really pushing himselfand wins. Mr. Ratburn congratulates him and announces that next year he'll be teaching kindergarten. D. W. looks shocked when she gets that bit of news, having teased Arthur all week longit's a just, surprising comeuppance. The real-life lesson about teachers who expectand geta lot from their students is gently and winningly conveyed. (6-8)
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4 Arthur and his friends are back, beginning another year of school, and who does Arthur have but Mr. Ratburn, the ``strictest teacher in the whole world.'' This year the students are preparing for the September spellathon, and while Miss Sweetwater's class is making popcorn and Mrs. Fink's class is going to the aquarium, the students in ``the Rat's'' class are studying harder than ever for the big event. On the night of the spellathon, the students from Miss Sweetwater's and Mrs. Fink's classes go down to defeat early, finally leaving Prunella, last year's winner, and Arthur as the two finalists. The outcome is predictable, but the story ends on the same fun-filled, child-pleasing note established on page one. As with previous Arthur books, there is a subtle messagethis time that perhaps Mr. Ratburn and others of his ilk aren't such bad teachers after allbut this may be too subtle for the intended audience. No matterBrown's appealing plot and grand illustrations (facial expressions are priceless) assure this book's popularity. Hayden Atwood, Cape Elizabeth Middle School, Maine
