Description: This classic textbook provides a comprehensive look at clinical phonology and the nature, assessment, and treatment of speech sound disorders. This update of the 2004 edition has been revised with up-to-date information and has added a new coauthor, Peter Flipsen, Jr., who brings a new perspective.
Purpose: This edition of this valuable textbook provides a foundation of knowledge of clinical phonology and speech sound disorders and features reorganized and updated information in each of the chapters.
Audience: Geared toward students in the field of speech-language pathology, it would be useful as a textbook for classes in articulation and phonological disorders and intervention at colleges and universities. However, it is also an excellent resource for everyone in the field of speech-language pathology, from emerging clinicians to experienced professionals.
Features: Among the two new chapters is the first one, which introduces readers to the study of clinical phonology, its related terminology, and basic information about speech sounds and the nature of speech sound disorders. Chapter three, reorganized and written by a new contributing author, Sharynne McLeod, presents a comprehensive review of normal speech sound acquisition and includes numerous tables summarizing pertinent studies. Chapter four, which examines classification and factors related to speech sound disorders, has been expanded with a new section devoted to the question of classification of both organically based speech sound disorders and disorders of unknown etiology. This chapter also covers childhood apraxia of speech, including a discussion of ASHA's new position statement on this subject.
Assessment: This updated and expanded edition of a classic textbook provides a foundation of knowledge for speech-language pathologists working with children with speech sound disorders. It offers a broad perspective of clinical phonology with a variety of approaches in the assessment and remediation of speech sound disorders. It is very well organized with chapter introductions, summaries, charts, graphs, and chapter questions to enhance learning and comprehension, making it a useful resource for the SLP student as well as for clinicians working with children with speech sound disorders.
