Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This guide stands apart from similar recent books. It has an unusually contemporary feel, including suggestions on posting journal pages online. Instead of becoming overly preoccupied with technique and materials, Johnson (contributing editor, Artist's Magazine) emphasizes readers' goals instead, asking them to consider why they want to keep a journal and encouraging them to attend to the sublime and the mundane alike. There is a chapter devoted to integrating this creative hobby into daily life. This effective guide is full of good advice and inspiration for keeping a highly personal, individualized artist's journal and will appeal to a broad audience.

This book is full of inspiration, tips and eye candy for artists and visual journalists who wish to capture special moments of time or the world around them. The layout is visually interesting and both Cathy Johnson's and other artists' paintings, drawings and illustrations are inspiring and serve to spur your own creativity and ideas. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to start keeping a visual or art journal and to anyone who has been keeping one and needs fresh ideas and inspiration.

The pages with the artist illustrations on were too small. It would be nice if in the case of art illustration type books there could be some way we could enlarge the images to get a closer look. It is the goal of art instruction books to be able to look at the images so we can learn from them. I even loaded it on my computer hoping for a closer look. In the magazines we are able too why not books? Otherwise this book is wonderful.

I actually borrowed this wonderful book from my local library until I couldn't renew it anymore! So, I decided it was time to buy and I am so glad I did. It is a treasure for the eye and mind of anyone who is interested in just starting their own artist journal or if you have been keeping your own journals for years. This book inspired me to perfect my own drawing skills, experiment with watercolors and to see my life and the people and scenery we take for granted with new eyes and deeper appreciation of I have.  It has been mentioned that some of the entries were too small but for me it didn't take away from the overall beauty and composition of the  entry.
