As someone who enjoys Irish and Irish American history and culture this book was very compelling.  It is written in such a way that combines the poetry of violence with the sarcasm of everyday life, to create both humor and nostalgia.  It is a smooth read, alternating between short and long stories, that will keep the reader engaged.  This is a wonderful piece of literature that is difficult to categorize because it reaches across many genres.

Could not put this book down.  It's not "terrifying" in the traditional sense--rather a chilling read. Victor is a most unforgettable character--full of unique and interesting contradictions. His actions perhaps not as shocking as the stoic, measured reactions to chaos , dysfunction and violence. This book is beautifully written and fast paced. An excellent book--especially for those who love deeply psychological reads!

The opening story in this book, a collection of short stories all narrated by the same grim Irish assassin, sets up the reader for a gripping ride through a blood-soaked, Tarantino-esque world where you aren't quite sure what memories are truth. Scanlon's prose grabs you and won't let go: It ties you up, holding you hostage to listen to snippets of lyricism from a shady character whom you know you can't trust--but you couldn't stop even if you wanted.

    BUY THIS BOOK!

Excellent book! This isn’t a book for the faint-hearted. If you have a sensitive stomach, or are easily disturbed by violence...don’t read it.

I’m not a fan of violent stories, or stories that are graphic in nature for the sake being graphic, but this book was really enjoyable.

The stories were a glimpse into another aspect of society, a darker side. They don’t justify the behavior, nor do they condemn it. They just reveal it. Many times I found myself completely relating to the protagonist, and enjoying his simple, yet permanent solutions to life’s situations. There was a sense of honor and nobility in the violence, with a side order of human emotion and tenderness.
