Editorial Reviews

Jaime Chambers
As Darkness Ends by Aaron Crocco is the first installment in a planned 6 novelette series. It begins the tale of Travis Hunter, a man chosen to be the tool used to impose God’s justice upon the earth. As Darkness Ends combines elements of Science Fiction with end of the world/apocalypse themed Speculative Fiction. It also contains Judeo-Christian religious structures which the author puts to good use in laying the foundation for the necessity of the main character’s actions.

As Darkness Ends is a rather short book, I was able to complete it in an hour or two. The story is about Travis, who like many others have just survived a devastating earthquake that destroyed New York City and the rest of the world. As hes traveling to get home he comes across Davos, a strange being from a different dimension. Davos tells him he must go around the world and link Encautum (a type of energy) to itself in 3 days or all of humanity is doomed. If he doesn't do it? He will die anyway

Meet the Author

Aaron Crocco can be summed up as a writer and a podcaster, but complicating issues further is the fact that he's a huge geek, Apple fanboy and loves Back to the Future so much that he owns a Delorean. In the mid-2000′s his writing spark was reignited and he's been tearing up the keyboard ever since, slinging words all over the place. Aaron's apocalyptic debut series AS DARKNESS ENDS explores the end of the world from many points of view. His short story PARADOX was published in November, 2011. He hails from Long Island, NY, the home of fishing, hockey, and Billy Joel. Aaron enjoys hockey, rock and roll, way too much ice cream, Nutella, and coffee.

    What Happens "As Darkness Ends?"

I don't get to read fiction much. Just aren't enough hours in the day, so when the opportunity came up to review a work of fiction, I jumped at the chance. The fact that it was someone I know from Twitter (Aaron Crocco or @MacStainless) made it even better.

So, I was provided a copy of the short story, "As Darkness Ends", and that began my journey into fiction reviews.

The premise of the book is simple. When a devastating earthquake hits the entire planet, Travis Hunter is among the survivors, and is tasked with a mission: help bring about the apocalypse or be killed. From there, we follow Hunter's journey across the globe, spreading judgment wherever he goes.

I read this story during the week that the Northeast suffered an Earthquake, Hurricane, and Tornadoes, so it seemed only fitting that it revolve around the mass destruction brought on by an earthquake. And I must say, the book grabs you from the first sentence. I can picture in my mind the scenes played out over the first few chapters, as Hunter tries to make his way back home, only to be stranded in the city to find refuge in a shelter.

Aaron Crocco paints a very vivid picture of the destruction that a major earthquake would cause New York City, and the ensuing mass hysteria that would follow. However, it began to feel a bit strained and forced as Hunter moved throughout the world, without the reader ever really understanding why. Yes, it is semi-explained, but we are left wondering if it really matters that people are being "judged".

It is my hope that, since this is the first story in a planned series, these questios will be answered. Maybe it is the author's intention to leave us with these questions.

    Great start to a series

As Darkness Ends is really great, quick and entertaining read. As a fan of apocalyptic themes in general, I was really pleased with the way the story played out from page 1. While "the end of the world" may be a familiar premise to sci-fi fans, the book does a great job in telling unique and compelling story that sets it apart from just being another addition to the genre. I look forward to reading the next book!
