Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
This gift book of devotions emphasizes adages by the author's grandmother. The author tells how she applied each saying to life. Every lesson has a Bible verse, a comment on it, and a prayer. In the devotion: "If I Had Meant Baste, I'd Have Said Baste" we learn that the grandmother quilted 10 to 12 stitches to the inch. Seeing the author's large stitches the grandmother patiently "showed me how to rock the needle in the fine motion she used to get her stitches." The Bible verse is from 1 Corinthians 10:31. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." As Christians our actions reflect on God. The prayer says: "Father, God, help me be deliberate in striving for excellence in all I do this day. In Jesus' most precious name. Amen." The author speaks of raising children, caring for her home, and worry about crow's feet. The pages have decorative borders. The text is interrupted by teacups, birds, butterflies, or a page of flowers done in watercolor. This is a nice devotional book for adults. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

    A Lovely Keepsake Book

Judith Robl's grandmother obviously made an unforgettable impression with her homespun axioms and adages - ones such as "How do you know you can't unless you try?" "Don't burn your bridges before you cross them," "If your head won't work, your heels must," and "You will not make a scene and disgrace the family." But who would believe such everyday admonitions could have biblical applications?

In AS GRANDMA SAYS: Timeless Words to Live By*, author Judith Robl has paired the everyday sayings with thoughtfully written meditations, well chosen scripture verses and brief prayers, thus creating forty-one devotional readings perfect for quiet moments of reflection.

Each page is illustrated with gorgeous paintings by artist Audrey Jeanne Roberts, turning the book into far more than just a devotional publication. It is a beautiful keepsake well suited for gift-giving and sharing.

    ISBN 978-0-7369-3004-8 48 pp. (Hdbk)

If every child were raised with a grandmother like Judith Robl's we'd live in a far better-and maybe a more interesting--world. Mrs. Robl's .grandmother taught important lessons with love and firmness.

Robl writes forty-one delightful stories about growing up under her grandmother's constant lessons. Each one-page story ends with a brief, appropriate prayer.

Her grandma was consistent, honest, opinionated and kind. This elderly woman obeyed and taught about God's directions for a successful life. She worked hard and was a life-long learner.

Judith Robl never forgot what Grandma's lips spoke and actions demonstrated. Robl brings her grandmother alive on the book's pages. We admire Mrs. Robl's grandma as a woman we'd like to have known. The author writes from her heart.

She's founder of Reflected Life Ministries, and is a speaker, a mentor, a loving grandmother and a great-grandmother. She talks to women about prayer, forgiveness and drawing closer to God. Her speeches reflect real-life family journeys both wonderful and life-shaking.

Artist Audrey Jeanne Roberts added warm, enchanting designs that quietly enhance each page. The artwork matches the beauty of the writing.

She says of the book,"Judith did a marvelous job on capturing wisdom that is fading from our culture."

    So true.

Audrey Jeanne Roberts loves connecting with real women in a way that can bring beauty, joy and humor to their daily lives. She designs artistic item for homes and gifts.

"As Grandma Says" is a wonderful way to pass along the truths your own grandmother may have she taught you when you were growing up and growing into your own faith.
