Overview

Though the Broadway musical revue As Thousands Cheer, with songs by Irving Berlin and sketches by Moss Hart, was a 400-performance hit after opening on September 30, 1933, record albums did not exist to preserve the score. Songs from the show were recorded on singles by its stars, Ethel Waters ("Heat Wave," "Harlem on My Mind," "Supper Time") and Clifton Webb ("Not for All the Rice in China," "How's Chances," "Easter Parade"), and some of those songs went on to become standards. But the show itself, a deliberately topical effort in which 1933 headlines provided the thematic structure, was never revived. Not, that is, until 1998, when the small Drama Dept. company, reducing the cast of nearly 50 to six (Kevin Chamberlin, Judy Kuhn, Howard McGillan, Paula Newsome, Mary Beth Peil, and B.D. Wong) produced As Thousands Cheer with new piano-and-bass arrangements by David Evans and a few minor alterations, but essentially as a period work. This, then, is the show's first-ever cast album, and it's well sung. The standards remain classic, and interesting, forgotten Berlin songs like "Lonely Heart" turn out to be good, too.
