Ascendance begins about 15 years after the events of the First Demonwars saga (The Demon Awakens, The Demon Spirit and The Demon Apostle). The demon has been long vanquished and Jilseponie Wyndon is now the Baroness of Palmaris. But her husband, Bryan -- the love of her life -- is dead, and so is her baby boy. Or is he?
The baby was, in fact, spirited away by the queen of the elves. For the last 14 years, Aydrian has been raised among the elves. But he is not, like his dead father, a legend among the elves -- he is headstrong and bitter. To complicate matters, he is a great fighter and has inherited his mother's magical powers with gemstones.
Jilseponie, meanwhile, is busy governing the bustling city of Palmaris -- and building a relationship with King Danube, arguably the most powerful man in the world. But certain high-ranking members of the Church are concerned about a shift in power with this romantic union. Jilseponie may have to do battle with the Church again...
And one of the coolest villains in recent history returns in this book: De'Unnero, the former Abellican bishop turned monster. I loved hating this guy!
In grand Salvatore fashion, the book ends with another cliffhanger that will leave readers biting their nails. And you don't have to read the previous trilogy to enjoy this book -- it's just recommended. (Paul Goat Allen)
