Meet the Author

Sable Grace is the writing team of Heather Waters and Laura Barone,long-time critique partners and friends who came together by fluke to discover their voices fit quite nicely during a writing experiment. The story became far too interesting to put down and Sable Grace was born.

Both Heather and Laura reside in Florida, are happily married to their real-life heroes, and are, well, complete opposites. Still, there’s enough common ground for them to weave their words together in the voice of Sable Grace.

Kyana is half Lychen, half Vampyre who works as a tracer for the Order of Ancients. She is Dark Breed that has chosen to use her powers for good, and is entrusted by the Order to find an ancient key that can send the rampaging Dark Breeds back to Hell. See, the Gods' powers are weakening, and the Chosen (those that will replace them)are being killed one by one. The only problem is Ryker, the demi-god that she's partnered with. See, a while back, Kyana tried to get Ryker in the sack and he turned her down, but it's probably not for the reason you might think. It's much more complicated than that, and so is their relationship, which is part of the fun of the awesome debut! Ascension is categorized as Paranormal Romance, however, it's firmly situated in the Urban Fantasy realm. Do not let the "Paranormal Romance" on the spine scare you off. For one thing, there's no steamy stuff until about two thirds in, and it's no more than you'd find in most urban fantasy. The writing duo that is Sable Grace has created a unique fantasy world where gods and myths are real, and "bump in the night" is par for the course. Some of my favorite scenes include Kyana's roommate and best friend, Haven, who is a witch. Their banter is witty and genuine, and the warmth and history between them is obvious. There are some truly terrifying creatures and plenty of rip roaring action, and the romantic friction between Kyana and Ryker keeps a nice hum of tension threaded throughout. This book has some wonderful twists and turns that kept me guessing, and a revelation that frankly had my jaw on the floor! This book kicks serious ass, and I can't wait for the next one!

I like this series

While browsing for something to read, Ascension was amongst the many books I was thinking about reading. And I’ve been reading a lot of urban fantasy lately so I thought this sounded interesting. The story is what drew me in and throughout the book, I did like the world building, the side characters and fast paced action. But at the beginning I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. Mostly because of the MC. But she does get a little better once she and co teams up. For me that’s when the book actually got interesting. So despite its flaws, I did like it and will at least give the other books in this series a read.

After all the good reviews I read before I purchased the book, I was extremely disappointed, confused, & a bit miffed when after reading the first few chapters I still didn't have a clue what was going on. Most always, the beginning chapters will set the stage of a good book. Sorry - but that hasn' t happened yet for me. I'm four chapters in & not happy. I will be back with an amazing review if I can get myself to struggle through a few more chapters & it changes drastically.

Brought to you by OBS reviewer Heidi Beware of Spoilers! Ascension is the first full-length book by the conglomeration of Heather Waters and Laura Barone who make up Sable Grace. It’s the start of the Dark Breed series and it introduces us to Kyana who is a mix of werewolf and vampyre. Dark breed is the derogatory term some use to describe her and it seems only fitting for it to be the name of the series. In the Dark Breed series the world is divided into several realms that are paralleled to one another. Beyond is where the Gods live on Mount Olympus, Above is where the humans live, then Below is where most magical creatures live, and lastly there is the Underworld, also known as Tartarus or hell. There are portals to where you can travel between the different realms if you meet the requirements to go to the desired realm (for example only the gods and goddesses can travel to Beyond). There is a war raging on Above, the demons have attacked and are taking over. Kyana is a tracer that helps kill the demons and also finds the important humans, the Chosen, who are slated to replace the gods and Fates. But now the Chosen are being picked off one by one leaving the gods susceptible as their powers are fading and they need their replacements before the world is taken over by the demons. And, worse yet they just discovered that someone has unlocked the gates to hell meaning every demon they send there can now come back. Now it’s up to Kyana and pain in her ass, Ryker, to find the key to hell and relock the gates so that they can finally defeat the demons and give Above back to the humans. But in a moment of panic for a friend, Kyana, breaks the law and now it could cost her not only the mission, but also her life. I was a little worried about this book after reading the first chapter. All the information was overwhelming and I worried that A) I would forget something important or just not grasp a critical concept or B) that the whole book would be weighted down with information like that chapter and I wouldn’t like the book. But I’m happy to tell you that once that chapter was over the book lightened up and flowed much smoother and I ended up enjoying the story. It ended up being an action packed mix of fantasy, mystery, and romance that you will be sure to love. I thought Kyana was an interesting heroine and found her being both lychen and vampyre made her much more versatile than lead characters in other series. This book just barely touched on her lychen side, but I expect it to be explored further in the future installments of the series. I also just really liked her kick-butt mentality and the humor in her internal dialog. Ryker was a steamy male lead. I loved the whole idea that he was holding out for something more serious with Kyana. I couldn’t wait for him to finally get intimate with her and hope for more steamy scenes between the couple in future installments of the series! I mean what girl wouldn’t want to be with someone who’s a half god? And, he sounds like the sexiest beach bum I’ve ever seen! Continued on openbooksociety dot com

Kyana is the best at what she does, tracking. Her unique blood, Vamp and Lychen, allows her to hold a scent longer than any of the other trackers and she uses it to her advantage. The Fates have an assignment they have determined Kyana is perfect for-saving the human world. Someone has opened the door to Tartarus, the Chosen are being killed along with all the other people and there is a trail that needs followed. The only catch is, Ryker. He is a demigod, Aries' son and his 'snub' ten years before still stings. Ryker knows he and Kyana are meant for each other, but because of her mixed blood, he doesn't believe she can mate for life. Her ease with fellow Vamp, Geoff makes Ryker jealous as does the attention she shows any male. Geoff is a necessary evil as far as Ryker is concerned. He is better connected than either he or Kyana so to accomplish their goal, they need him. Fighting Dark Breeds, searching for dead gods, trying to keep her focus off Ryker's sexiness and meeting a soulless race she never knew existed are just a few of Kyana's adventures. Her personal life keeps interfering, she can't keep Ryker off her mind, her best friend, Haven potentially getting married is nerve-wracking and she has more questions than answers. Kyana is literally in a race against time to save the world, her friends and herself before Tartarus destroys it all! A wonderfully thrilling, fast-paced story! It will sink its teeth into you and not let go! Reviewed by Ashley Wintters for Suspense Magazine
