Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Newcomer Ashanti caught the eye of Murder Inc. CEO Irv Gotti because of her exceptional singing and writing skills -- not to mention her stunning beauty. After being signed to the label, the 21-year-old collaborated with Inc. star Ja Rule on three tracks on his Pain Is Love disc -- most notably the smash single "Always On Time." And this new princess of hip-hop soul is sure to continue her lucky streak with her self-titled debut, kicked off by the DeBarge/Notorious B.I.G.-sampled lead single, "Foolish."

Young, pretty, sexy, stylish, and hip, Ashanti is everything a modern, post-hip-hop soul crooner should be. She looks the part, trucks with hitmakers -- at the time her eponymous debut was released, she was featured on a hit single by Fat Joe -- and even approximates Alicia Keys' visuals on the back cover. She can sing, but she's not showy; she never hyperventilates, she croons. Her first album sounds modern, with fairly fresh beats and lightly insistent hooks, and is just naughty enough to warrant a parental advisory sticker though if you're just listening to this record, it's nigh on impossible to figure out where the objectionable lines are. So why doesn't Ashanti play as greater than the sum of its parts? Largely because it lacks distinctive material, in either terms of the actual songs or the production -- and when that's combined with a singer who is good, yet not distinctive herself, the entire production sounds as if its treading water or providing nifty aural wallpaper. It's not bad by any means, and it has its moments, but at 17 tracks, including skits, it all becomes a blur. A pleasing blur, one that shows promise, but a blur all the same.
Rolling Stone
Ashanti Douglas' voice is the perfect radio-ready R&B instrument: strong enough to ride over street-savvy beats but unassuming enough to be open to interpretation; better than Britney but less distinctive than Mary J. Blige. Kris X

    Great

Ashanti's debut album was surprisingly one of the best R&B albums to come out in 2002. With Ashanti's smooth, breathy vocals, deep, passionate lyrics, and girl-next-door appearance, she's the stuff R&B divas are made of. Sure, she's no Aaliyah, Beyonce, or Monica voice-wise, but she's pretty, and has a pretty voice to go with it. Gotta give the girl props.

    Ashanti is Great!

Ashanti is a great singer! I thought this was a great cd. I can't stop listening to it! It sounds really good when she sings with Ja Rule. I really liked "Dreams" and "Happy". "Foolish" was good too. You should buy this cd, I bet you will love it too!

    Hey!

I've only heard a few songs from this album, like the singles Foolish and Happy. Foolish is my favorite of these two because I can relate to it... wich isn't a nice thing exactly but I still love the song. But something that pisses me me off is that when I came here to listen to the samples and clicked on a song title it wasn't that song that was played but a song from another album! Same thing with all the other samples. BN definitely needs to bring some order into their music sample links!!

    Ashanti??

I only heard Foolish,Unfoolish,Baby,Happy, and Call so I can't say her album is great. But those songs are good even though the beats are from other people. But she is not the next Aaliyah so stop saying it. Ashanti's voice is not that great. She can't hold a high note. She can't dance. Now how could u say she's the next Aaliyah. Aaliyah could do everything! Ashanti can probably work up the ability of Aaliyah's level but she will NOT take her place

    Diva.....I think not!!!!

This is the worst CD i have heard in a while. Ashanti can't sing, PERIOD. If she has a record deel, then I deserve to get one. Ashanti is a studio artist. Everything from her voice to her tracks. None of which are original.

    Disgusting Album

This album is so bad, i can't even begin to describe it. Lemme start at the beginning: INTRO - I feel sorry for the producer of this CD, if they actually think they did a good job of colliding the songs into the stupid intro. FOOLISH - This song sounds too familiar ... (cough cough, B.I.G.) HAPPY - This songs is just the basic formula to a hip-pop song. Ja Fool rambling in the background is just depressing. She really can't sing fo shat! LEAVING - No comment, this song sucks. Skit are all dumb. Okay, I'm just gonna stop here. She cannot sing. She sounds like a baby whining for her bottle. She needs to remove the thought from her head that she cannot sing. And she has a hunchback. Unoriginal album. Don't buy it. If i could give it zero stars i would. It is awful.

    She's doing her thang....

Ashanti is very pretty. She can hold a note for a minute or so. But her album wasn't great. I admit there were a few good tracks, but everyone makes it seem as if it was what the "Music World" was missing. It was coo. I'd buy it, but it could use someone who has better vocal skills and a producer and writer who know how to do their jobs. For starting out, she did pretty well. Hopefully, as she progresses in the music industry, she will acquire better knowledge of her business.

BORING- if you are into vocals

Yawn. All of the songs sound alike. So many people comment on how 'pretty' she is. Well from the speakers of a CD player, she sounds boring. If you are into vocals, do not buy this CD! If hooks and beats are enough to get you going then have fun.

    Tight

This album is so dope. Ashanti is such a good astist and is very talented and writes her own music, it also does help that she's on the same label as ja rule and he is such a god. All in all I think this album is worth buying.

The New Princess of Hip Hop

Murder Inc.¿s princess of hip hop, Ashanti, kicks it off for the year 2002 with her selftitled debut. Ashanti is known for her talented lyrics, which makes every song on her album even more smart and sexier. She is a woman of original style and she can definitely sing. ¿Ashanti¿ has been off the charts as since it hit the stores. The hot debut single, ¿Foolish¿, was an immediate hit. Other songs, such as, ¿Dreams¿ and ¿Happy¿, with their optimistic lyrics, incorporates a high spirited flavor into the Hip-Hop genre. You don¿t find much of that in Hip Hop these days; in addition to that, her angelic voice tops it all. No wonder most big hip hop artists want Ashanti to feature in their songs. She has partnered up with Ja Rule in ¿Always on Time¿, ¿Bad Azz Chick¿, and sung with Fat Joe in ¿What¿s Love¿; which of course are top selling singles. It seems like everything that Ashanti touches turns into gold these days.
