Set in Afghanistan, Ashes and Light tells the story of Khadija, a young Afghan woman who leaves her medical studies behind to help her father after the death of her beloved brother, and Michael, the American she views as her sworn enemy. Their intersecting pasts throw them together when Michael discovers a plot that, if successful, will lead to war between China and America. It's up to him to put a stop to it, and he can't do it without Khadija's help. I enjoyed this story as much for the exotic setting as for the high adventure the two main characters find themselves sharing. Both are conflicted by guilt and divided loyalties, to the point where I was kept on the edge of my seat right up to the end, wondering if their growing love for each other would be enough in the end.

Like Afghanistan itself, Ashes and Light is many things. A harrowing thrill ride through the country's dangerous mountains--and its even more dangerous politics. A riveting and subtle depiction of a proud people caught in a punishing war. But most of all, it's a story of the passion between an Afghan woman and an American spy, two people whose love might just bridge the gulf between two worlds.
Ashes and Light is a rich and evocative book. If you pick it up you won't be able to put it down.
