Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Where in the world is Asia? The “Rookie Read-About Geography” series introduces young readers to the seven continents that constitute most of the landmasses on earth. The format is similar in each title—simple text plus clear. They present readers with information about land features, animals, people, and more. Asia is the largest continent but it only has 40 countries compared to the 50 in Africa. Most of the world’s people live in Asia and much of the world’s rice comes from Asia, as do most of the world’s electronic components. The climate in Asia varies from very hot tropics, dry windy deserts, to cold and snowy and therefore the vegetation also varies. Other pages features animals unique to Asia—giant pandas, Bengal tigers and the Komodo dragon. The highest mountain in the world is located in Asia. The section entitled “Modern Marvels” features the Burj Khalifa, which is the world’s tallest building. The picture glossary contains four entries. The book closes with an index, website link for more information and a sentence about the author. As a first reader it is certainly adequate and the goal would be to elicit further interest in reading about the continent and its countries. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 5 to 6.
