School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-Ishizuka profiles 10 authors, including noted children's authors Sook Nyul Choi, Bette Bao Lord, Yoshiko Uchida, and Laurence Yep, as well as adult authors such as Bharati Mukherjee, Amy Tan, and Maxine Hong Kingston. The brief essays are fascinating and diverse; they discuss the writers' lives from childhood to adulthood, how they came to their craft, and their involvement in the Asian-American community. Readers learn that Uchida's family was interned during World War II and Choi's family escaped when the Japanese invaded her native North Korea. Good-quality, black-and-white photographs appear throughout. Well written and interesting, this solid collective biography will be good for pleasure reading as well as for assignments.-DeAnn Tabuchi, San Anselmo Public Library, CA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
