Editorial Reviews

VOYA
One of a threepart Ethnic Minorities in America series, which includes AfricanAmerican History on File and HispanicAmerican History on File, this resource covers the whole chronology of AsianAmerican history, from the earliest immigration of significant numbers of Asians to the mid1990s. Chapters are arranged chronologically: "Background," "Gan Saam (Pre1900)," "The Early 20th Century (19001945)," "The Second Wave (19461974)," "Model Minorities and the Refugees (1975Present)," and "Afterwards: AsianAmerican Cultural Contributions." The standard looseleaf binder format includes many charts, maps, photographs, and time lines, all of which are licensed for photocopying. This volume is a useful, succinct, allinone resource for information about Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, and Thai immigrants. Pacific Islandersincluding Hawaiiansare not included in this book, although many sources used by the editors do cover them. A curious inclusion is the mention of Daniel Akaka, a Hawaiian who is currently a United States Senator from Hawaii, whereas John Waihee, a native Hawaiian governor of that state from 1986 to 1994, is not mentioned. Student researchers will find this volume beneficial as a supplement to other materials for their papers. Libraries that already own The Asian American Almanac: A Reference Work on Asians in the United States (Gale, 1995) may want to consider whether they need this source, which duplicates many charts and maps from that book. Index. Illus. Photos. Maps. Charts. Biblio. Source Notes. Chronology. 1999, Facts on File, Ages 12 to 18, 160p, $125. Reviewer: Kat Kan
