Gr 3-5-These titles briefly cover the immigration history and culture of the two ethnic groups. The homeland, when and why people left, their trip over and reception in the U.S., the jobs they held, living conditions, family life, foods, customs, celebrations, and music-these topics are clearly and reliably treated in self-contained spreads. To add a personal touch, the opening and closing spreads spotlight the same individual, as a new immigrant and then later in life. Asian Indian is illustrated primarily with contemporary, full-color photographs; Italian includes black-and-white and sepia archival pictures. The attractive layouts feature sidebars with well-selected details and quotations, appropriate maps, and a readable typeface.-Diane S.
