Things that make you go hmmmm.

I looked at this book because I heard a lot about it and wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was all about. My first clue that this book was a horse of a different color was when I found it in the "metaphysical" section of the bookstore.

I have to be honest though, I never made it through the whole book. It centers around this "spirit" called Abraham and all the advice and teaching it gave to the authors.

Definitely for the "New Age" crowd, if this kind of thing interests you, then for the type of book that it is, its a good one. The book has 22 sections, whose purpose is to help you achieve your goals in life by asking you some reflective types of questions- which I did find motivating. Although not my cup of tea, the book is quite popular and I can recommend it to anyone looking for something different and inspiring. For readers who like more conventional books in the self-help genre, I recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator.

    Expand your God

For those of you who know that God is more than what our ancient books tell us, this book is for you. As a matter of fact, after reading this book, the Bible makes sense to me for the first time. I've studied the Bible for 30 years, and in one reading of this book, I now get it, the Bible that is. I'm just sorry I didn't read this first, and then the Bible. This book ADDS to the Bible, it doesn't debunk it. Ask and It is Given does not mention the Bible AT ALL, it is I who have made the comparison. Read this-it will change your life.

    I Also Recommend:

Invest the time, reap the rewards.

This is a great follow up book to the "Law of Attraction." I found the information continued to build on the foundation established in the earlier book with continuity. One must read it slowly to absorb the true message being shared. This is not a quick skim type of reading, if you want to experience the full benefit.

This book is 311 pages in length, well written, easy to understand, and well organized in sequence. I find it could have been easily two books. One with the full message and applications and a second dealing with the 22 processes. I actually stopped reading once into the 22 individual processes, went back to the beginning, and reread using my day-glow yellow highlighter. I got so much more out of the information the second time around. Might I suggest this method for you too?

Highly recommend it for all of those on their journey of self discovery and personal development.

    This book changed my life.

This book is fantastic and full of practical information. My favorite aspect of this book discusses emotions, esp. negative emotions and describes how to move from a very negative place like despair in a step by step process utilizing emotions like anger, blame, frustration, until you can reach hope and joy. I loved the idea because when you feel very bad about a subject it feels impossible to just 'forgive' or 'let go' and reach for joy. It is much more practical to reach for anger which feels better than despair, and then frustration which feels better than anger. I had never approached emotions as a being on a vibrational scale which I could climb using self-talk. It gives examples of how to talk to yourself into a better feeling place. Very practical and frankly it works. I have tried many years of psychotherapy and never learned this simple technique which I use daily to feel better.

    Buyers Beware

Esther Hicks writes for a "nonphysical intelligence" known as Abraham in this former New York Times Best Seller, Ask and It is Given. What I found most interesting in Ask were the deviations from Esther and Jerry (her husband) Hicks' 1989 book A New Beginning I, which predicted various "earth changes" that were on the brink of occurring in 1989, including simultaneous volcanic eruptions that would cover the earth's air with ash. In Ask, these revelations of turbulence are not even touched upon. There are also various inconsistencies within Ask regarding Jerry and Esther's initial encounters with Abraham, including an altered-or cleverly tailored version-of Abraham's first words. As for the "biographical sketch" provided in Ask about Jerry and Esther's life pre-Abraham, it is incredibly vague. It tells us that Jerry was very successful before Abraham, but does not mention that Jerry Hicks was a Crown level distributor at Amway, who was giving seminars about positive thinking and motivation. Only instead of using the Abraham works, he was using those of Napoleon Hill. Dateline did a wonderful expose on Amway, revealing a major business within Amway that was not in selling various appliances/supplies, but in selling motivational courses and materials within the company. It is clear that Jerry was involved in this sort of motivational selling with Think and Grow Rich before his Abraham work. While the effect of Think and Grow Rich on Jerry's life is mentioned in Ask, the Amway link is never made, though it is touched on in various interviews with the Hickses. Of course, this seems to be irrelevant to most readers of the Abraham materials. To me, this was an important fact that made Jerry and Esther appear less like sincere messengers of positive thinking and more like pious frauds for Napoleon Hill. The chapters in Ask offer an emotional guidance scale to let you know where you are and some 22 processes to help you reach a better feeling place to help you align with those things that you are wanting. The 22 processes include an interesting combination of cognitive therapy, visualization, and New Age woo. Though some of them seem very helpful, there does seem to be some undermining as the processes and rhetoric ask you to set aside critical thinking and replace it with emotional guidance. Also, for the entities that have claimed to not wish to alter our beliefs, these processes suggest otherwise, as they are designed to assist us in altering our beliefs. Various emotional appeals, combined with validation for whatever you want to believe in, make this book very appealing to anyone who wants approval or to believe that they can be, do, or have anything they want. This book operates under the claim that it will help you manifest your desires. But buyers beware, the authors take no responsibility for anything you are unable to manifest using their processes and there are no objective means for testing how well you are doing. And based on the logic presented within the book, even if you are unable to manifest something: All is well. I do not recommend this book to someone trying to manifest something, but rather to someone who wants to become a devotee of one of the most popular channels of our time. When you find yourself needing to listen to their CDs and watch their youtube videos more than anything else, that's when you know you've found a friend.

    Excellent Book

Read the book. If you don't get it, read it again. If you still don't get it, read it again. Listen to what they're telling you and absorb it. This state of Zen is fantastic!

    ok

From the other reviews, I was expecting this book to be amazing. But I thought it was verbose and redundant. In the first part of the book, each chapter is split up into titled subsections. One section describes an idea or principle, and the following section, under a different title says almost exactly the same thing as the previous one, except using more words. I started wondering, 'How many times can they repeat something?' That said, I found the second half of the book to be the most helpful. It contains 22 different 'processes' to choose from to 'improve your point of attraction.' I've done a couple, and found they really do help in focusing my emotions in a more positive direction so I can attract more of what I want in life.

    Inspiring Words

This is the basis for almost All LAW OF ATTRACTION books. Others have profited off of the Hicks teachings. Why waste your time and money on all those other students when you can get to the source here.

Very straight forward, clear and practical. I am sold. I was not "into" all this stuff, but kept an open mind and now I find this book to be very helpful in keeping me appreciative of life and all that it has to offer.

If you find all that Law of Attraction stuff, "Iffy" and can't figure out how to "practice" it. This Book, ASK AND IT IS GIVEN, gives you practical applications for putting action into the work and has opened my mind to limitless possibilities. It truly creates a mind shift...If you want to live a life of gratitude...this IS the book!

    Very helpful for me

I loved this book. I had read many similar books but this one resonated for me. It made the connection between emotions and manifesting. When I would do my 'think and grow rich' type affirmations, my gut feelings were negative. The Processes at the end of this book help to reduce the negative feelings and spend more time being happy...and more and more abundance is manifesting in my life. Thanks

My fallback for Abraham-Hicks Law of Attraction references

This book was my 'formal' introduction to LoA, and I refer to it a lot. Especially the emotional guidance scale, and examples of how to get into the vortex or into alignment using the processes in Part II.

I have read most of The Vortex and some of the other books, and when asked what to read as an introduction, I still refer people to this book.

I also have it as the raffle prize at my meetups, in addition to some of the other ones I have acquired, since I like it so much.

    Always Inspirational

I am truly appreciative of the well explained processes and excellent organization. The Abraham books are always inspirational, but I found this book particularly helpful when I was looking for a specific answer or process. The details and descriptions made it simple for me to find the perfect solutions.

This Is The Book That Changed My Life

I've been a student of the science of Deliberate Creation and Law of Attraction for a little over a year since a friend recommended this book to me. My copy is dog-earred, highlighted, post-it-noted, and margin-written, as are many of the copies owned by others. Simply, the book is a tool to make positive change in your life. As you begin to apply the principles of Abraham's teachings, you begin to see them manifest in your life very quickly. Your job is to supply the belief, faith and trust in yourself and the Universe. It truly is that easy. It is not a 'religious' book. It is not about an organized group of people who come together to think alike. All that is needed is extended positive thought, eventual pure and focused belief in that thought, and the ability to receive the results into your life. Since learning about 'Ask...', I have also learned a LOT about this subject from 'The Secret' by Rhonda Byrne(DVD & book) and 'Think and Grow Rich' by Napoleon Hill. I recommend them all.

Manifest the Life You Desire and Deserve!

This is the first book that I have read by Jerry & Esther Hicks, and I must say---the material in this book is superb! After reading it, I immediately ordered another book by these authors. If you want to learn about the process of manifestation---and how you, too, can manifest what you desire in life---then you must read this book. Written in language that is easy for anyone to understand, you will learn all of the important theories and processes behind the art of manifestation. The first part of the book reveals important concepts and the second half gives you great exercises to put the theories into practice. Don't wait--start manifesting the life you want now!

    Worth every penny!

If only we can learn to ask for what we want, and then believe we truly deserve it, we can have anything we ask for. The Law of Attraction makes it so. Try it, you have nothing to lose.
