Overview

A teen girl's guide to life, love, friends, and growing up, in an intimate diary format from Saved By the Bell star and popular teen spokesperson Elizabeth Berkley.

Ask Elizabeth is the complete guide to teen life; the last and only self-help book they'll ever need. Drawn from the many workshops Elizabeth Berkley has conducted with teen girls across the country, Ask Elizabeth brings these revealing and intimate conversations to life on the page.

Much like a private diary, the book is a personal resource that girls can turn to when they seek answers to teen life's toughest questions. It contains real and practical advice, anecdotes, and Elizabeth's own life lessons in answer to frequently asked questions from Elizabeth's workshop, such as: What do you do when you look in the mirror and don't like what you see? or How do you get a guy to know you're alive?

Along with a panel of experts, Elizabeth advises teen girls in matters of sex, nutrition, fitness, body image, personal relationships, and more.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Their parents might recognize Elizabeth Berkley as one of the stars of television's Saved by the Bell, but teenage girls know her as the helpful moderator of the Ask-Elizabeth advice website. Ask Elizabeth the book utilizes her accrued wisdom to dispense supportive counsel on topics including, but not limited to, self-esteem, menstruation, peer pressure, adjusting to new situations, and hanging out with boys.

Kirkus Reviews
Actress Berkley (Saved by the Bell) tries her hand at advice for young women in a question-and-answer format. Culling from workshops of the same title that she has conducted for the past four years, discussion is centered around a grouping of topics: self-image, romantic relationships, friends and bullies, family issues and, finally, a section on mental health and defining self. Mimicking the look of a scrapbook, chapters include suggestions from the author and feature scraps of paper with handwritten inquiries from girls who attended the workshops. Also on offer are honest and thoughtful testimonials written by teens themselves about the various subjects and the occasional blurb from a professional. Collages of images and hand-drawn designs decorate the pages and add to the informal, confessional tone. Berkley maintains a chatty, direct voice throughout that contributes to the accessibility of the work but may turn some readers off. Often urging readers to think of her almost as if they know her by using phrases such as, "Please know that I fully honor, accept and love every single one of you," or exhorting girls to be themselves because, "Trust me, [the real you]'s pretty amazing!" may leave the more skeptical feeling that the familiarity established in the workshops doesn't translate authentically to the page. References to the author's website are included.(Self-help. 12-18)
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—The founder of the nonprofit organization Ask Elizabeth has created a "group diary" filled with questions commonly asked by teens and the advice to guide them through the emotional roller coaster of adolescence. Combining expert sound bites with personal stories from real teens as well as her own experiences, Berkley dishes out guidance to readers and maintains the tone of an older, cooler cousin/hip aunt. The design does indeed resemble a diary as it filled with collage, handwritten asides, Polaroid photos, and other ephemera. The overall format is cluttered and a bit messy, but true to a personal journal. The volume doesn't really add anything new to the canon of teen-girl empowerment, offering up the usual self-esteem tropes, but the message is certainly valuable.—Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta

A MUST HAVE FOR TEENAGE GIRLS!!!!

Before I read this book I was a misunderstood nobody gets me crazy girl and after I read the book I was an intelligent confident - on & off edgy - new girl. This changed my life & made me have a whole different -positive- Outlook on life; I saw it in a different light. & the realbenefit is knowing that your not alone, your not crazy, & finding out that people really do "get" you. It's also cool to know its not one of those books that you read & say, "Wow, that was good.. next". It's more like this "Wow, I'm inspired.. I know I can always rely on this book. It's definitely a keeper." I also recommend this book to "soon to be moms of girls *Congratz if your the lucky 1 :) because it can be a guide to what to look out for and you will be fully prepared. This as a extra present to your teen child can show that you care & "get them" which is so relieving. So GET the book!!
