Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The sea has played an important part in every military conflict known to modern man. For most, this importance comes from controlling the seas. Another important aspect is the various invasions that countries have mounted starting from the sea. The World War I landing at Gallipoli, the allied landing at Normandy, along with other important ocean mounted attacks are explained in Tom McGowen's book. In this volume of the "Military Might" series, McGowen goes to great lengths to explain what occurred during each event and its importance to the overall conflict. The numerous historical photographs provide the reader with a real look into what really happened during these moments in history. This book provides a great starting point for any student looking into specific battles and their impact. Explanations and language are such that even reluctant readers or poor readers will benefit from reading this non-fiction. 2002, Twenty-First Century Books, Orsborn

Gr 5-8-The introduction of Sea mentions early historical incursions such as "the Sea People" attempting to invade Egypt, the Persians trying to conquer Greece, and the violent windstorm that thwarted the Chinese invasion of Japan some 700 years ago. The 12- to 15-page chapters that follow discuss the preparation, action, and results of various invasions of World War I, World War II, and Korea. The first chapter of Sky briefly describes how the Axis and Allies each developed their own paratrooper units. The remaining text discusses some of the more famous battles in which paratroopers took part. In both books, potentially unfamiliar terms are defined in the text. Half- and full-page vintage photos are scattered throughout. Captions describe them, but are not useful as supplemental information. The brevity of these titles makes them introductory material exclusively. Some of the text is a little too glib, resulting in the loss of just how serious, devastating, and costly in human lives the engagements really were. The endpapers in both titles contain maps of the regions discussed in the texts. Battle sites are highlighted and major ones are magnified. Even with the minor problems, these selections are adequate purchases.-Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
