Introduction

Every day hundreds of employees are promoted to supervisory positions. Many have mixed emotions. Although they are absolutely delighted with the promotion, they are also overwhelmed by the forthcoming responsibility of supervising people. Management does not help this situation. Many companies don't go through a thorough process in selecting new supervisors. In many cases the selection is based on how well the person has performed as an individual contributor. Unfortunately, the best performer doesn't always make the best leader.

During my management career I witnessed many first-time supervisors struggle with management responsibilities. Some, after experiencing psychological and/or physical problems, eventually resigned, requested demotions, or were terminated. Others read self-help books and sought additional management training. In time, many of these managers increased their self-confidence and became more comfortable in their management role.

There have been many books written on management, but few of them target the first-time manager and focus on the people skills needed to be an effective leader. This book presents a total self-development program to help new managers build self-confidence, improve social skills, and develop assertive skills. Although it is written for the first-time manager, it will benefit any manager who wants to unlearn all those old, self-defeating behaviors that prevent them from managing assertively.
