This was the first book I have ever read by Doreen Virtue, and as I read, each chapter seemed to be a reflection of myself. I strongly identified with her description of an "Earth Angel" (one who is highly sensitive, with an innocent outlook on life, and believes in God's loving power), and found that I seemed to fall into the many pitfalls that these Earth Angels suffer. I am too darn nice for my own good. With each page, I found myself thinking "Yep, that's me." or "Yep, I do that too!" I am a people-pleaser. I feel that I can't be happy unless everyone else around me is happy too, and when I can't make everyone happy - I get frustrated and feel like there is something wrong with me. This book was like a journey of self discovery, where I was recognizing all the unhealthy patterns I am prone to fall into. In each chapter, Doreen touches on subjects such as recognizing and handling toxic relationships, how to stop people-pleasing, how to be assertive with a strong-willed child, and be assertive with authority figures in a non-aggressive and more loving way. She also addresses on how important it is for us to love ourselves, and to take care of ourselves so we can have more time to do the things that are important for us. If you're too nice for your own good, and think it's time to take your power back and stand up for yourself and your feelings - I'd say give this book a read. :)

Doreen Virtue's Assertiveness for Earth Angels: How to Be Loving Instead of "Too Nice" is a useful and informative book that teaches the importance of being assertive. What I love about this book is that Virtue tells stories about her life, sharing an intimate look into her heart and her character. A quick read, you could easily fill a weekend reading it. Makes a great gift, especially around the holidays. Highly recommended!!!

I follow Doreen and have read many of her books but I found this book to be lacking in depth. The definition of earth angel is not made clear and many of the characteritics applied are those of codependents. She speaks more to feelings and behaviors rather than providing tools for dealing with them. I came away with more questions than answers.

A must read for anyone having troubles setting boundaries for ourselves and for others in our lives.
