Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Ann Schwoebel, MSN, CRNP (University of Pennsylvania Health System)
Description: There has been a paucity of good reference texts regarding the care of the normal newborn. Fortunately, this first edition offers a comprehensive source on the subject. This textbook is published in a handbook format.
Purpose: The editors' intent is to create a guide in caring for the well newborn.
Audience: This handbook will appeal to a wide audience and is intended for anyone caring for well newborn infants, although I am certain that new nurses working in Level I nurseries will find it most beneficial.
Features: This text is divided into seven sections, each pertaining to a specific aspect of normal newborn care. It begins with the obstetric considerations in the management of the well newborn, delivery room management, and evaluation and care during the transitional period. The last four sections discuss the post-transition care, common problems, infections, and then discharge planning and follow-up. In addition, the appendix contains several information sheets that can be copied for distribution to parents. The result is a well-written, understandable textbook that offers sufficient detail to serve as an excellent reference for the most experienced practitioner, while maintaining the interest of those new to the field of neonatology/pediatrics. The one drawback is that the references are not current. Color photographs in the beginning of the text appear to be first generation and excellent in quality. This will serve as a reference guide to the practitioner. The index is comprehensive and easy to use.
Assessment: This textbook covering all aspects of well newborn care is recommended to anyone with an interest in providing care to the well newborn.
