Editorial Reviews

New edition of a resource for clinicians and students, providing assessment tools and resource materials applicable to a wide variety of assessment and diagnostic activities. Includes material on obtaining, interpreting, and reporting pre-assessment and assessment information, and discusses assessment of articulation and phonological processes, language, fluency, voice and resonance, neurologically based communicative disorders, dysphagia, hearing, and special populations. Spiral wire binding. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
From the Publisher

"The information is accurate and the charts, illustrations and forms are also excellent. I would use this book often in my practice."

"I would require this text as an introductory text for students. But I would also recommend this text as a resource for SLPs in the field, who may find it very useful with clients who are low incidence on their caseload, or who are changing positions and need to be refreshed if the population they are serving changes."

Description: This manual, an update of the 2004 edition, is a comprehensive resource for the assessment of communicative disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to "provide students and professionals with a variety of information, materials, and procedures for use in the assessment of communicative disorders." The authors have succeeded in providing a detailed collection of assessment and diagnostic information for a wide range of speech and language disorders.
Audience: The book is geared toward both emerging clinicians and experienced professionals in the field of speech-language pathology. The wide range of assessment tools and useful reproducible materials make this an excellent resource for everyone in the field. It would also be a useful text for instruction in assessment and diagnostic procedures classes at colleges and universities.
Features: An overview of assessment and evaluation considerations is provided, followed by chapters about specific communicative disorders. Sources of additional information are listed at the end of each chapter, including assessment tools and Internet links. This edition features a new chapter on literacy including the role of the speech-language pathologist, normative information for reading and writing development, and the assessment of phonemic awareness, reading, writing, and spelling. There is also expanded and updated information on pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders, fluency disorders, and apraxia of speech. The book is well organized and is written in a clear and understandable style with color-coded chapters for ease of navigation. A multitude of clinical materials are contained in the text and in the accompanying CD-ROM, including 61 editable forms, stimulus materials, anatomical illustrations, and a variety of Internet links. The detailed table of contents includes lists of tables, forms, and figures with corresponding pages.
Assessment: This excellent resource for the assessment of a wide range of communicative disorders has been updated and expanded. The inclusion of various types of testing procedures, materials for obtaining assessment information, as well as for interpreting and reporting the information, makes this a well rounded resource for beginning clinicians, experienced clinicians, and students. The supplemental reproducible materials are an added bonus.
