Overview

This new resourceful title in Plural's Protocols series is distinctive from its' series companions in that it provides extensive background information and procedural overviews needed to assess swallowing disorders in adults in addition to offering the detailed protocols for administering the assessment. More than three-quarters of the protocols in this book are provided in both English and Spanish, allowing clinicians to effectively and efficiently assess swallowing disorders in a wide variety of patients. In addressing absence of effective clinical tools to reach the expansive Spanish-speaking clientele, and by reducing tedious treatment planning and preparation time, this dysphagia resource and collection of protocols and provide clinicians with a complete one-stop English/Spanish guide.

All forms presented in the book are provided in user-friendly Microsoft Word documents on an accompanying CD-ROM, which clinicians are encouraged to modify and reproduce for clinical use.

Also by these authors: Treatment of Dysphagia in Adults: Resources and Protocols in English and Spanish follows the same format and serves as a companion volume.

Reviewer: Amanda McAdoo, BA (George Washington University)
Description: This book, intended as a reference for speech-language pathologists to properly assess dysphagia in adults, provides treatment protocols and screening tools in both Spanish and English. A CD contains electronic files of the protocols and screeners in the book.
Purpose: The purpose is to instruct speech-language pathologists in the techniques of assessing dysphagia in adults. Because communication assessment is so different from dysphagia assessment, separate training is needed. The book includes assessment protocols in the forms of scripts for clinicians and clients to follow to assist during the assessment. The author's clear writing style and written scripts are very helpful and meet the author's objectives.
Audience: Practicing speech pathologists working with clients with dysphagia management issues are the intended audience. The three all have supervisory and swallowing management expertise.
Features: The book is broken down into different stages of assessment of the swallow. A normal swallow is described in detail, followed by various screening tools to assist in the case history, the actual swallow study, and diet recommendations. The in-depth protocols cover a wide range of dysphagia treatment and management. Protocols and handouts are provided for the SLP as well as other health professionals and family members. The authors' decision to include both English and Spanish protocols is incredibly helpful, and a unique addition. While the majority of the book consists of assessment protocols and scripts, the beginning chapters outline the development of the swallow and the normal swallow. The chapters are well written and concise.
Assessment: This is a very helpful supplementary guide on the assessment and treatment of dysphagia in adults. Although Logemann's Evaluation and Treatment of Swallowing Disorders, 2nd edition (Pro-Ed, 1998), is much more comprehensive and outlines various aspects of the swallowing assessment in greater detail, this book's unique makeup of protocols and handouts make it a good contribution to the field.
