Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
A cartoon drawn with such supreme artistry, and a text layered with such glorious wordplay, satire and historical and political allusion that no reader should ever feel like they've outgrown it.—TIME OUT

The Asterix books represent the very summit of our achievement as a literary race. In Asterix one finds all of human life. The fact that the books were written originally in French is no matter. I have read them all in many languages and, like all great literature, they are best in English. Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge, Asterix's translators since the very beginning, have made great books into eternal flames.—THE TIMES

I grew up reading Asterix in French and Spanish ( my favorite is the original French version, but the Spanish is very nicely done by the way). My kids spotted the books on a visit to my parent's home, and I was thrilled to find them in English. We started out by reading Asterix and Cleopatria, Asterix Gladiator and Asterix in Switzerland. They love them all! I am looking forward to expanding our collection! By the way, the cover of our original French book included an excellent parody of the subtitles of the movie starring Liz Taylor as Cleopatra. I'll never forget that!!

First of all, I'm really happy these are being rereleased. I've read them all, and have been searching for english versions of these. Asterix and Cleopatra is hilarious. Full of classic humor and charm you would expect in an Asterix novel, it is a great gift for a new generation. The jokes about Cleopatra's nose you will never get tired of, and come on, you will not get sick of seeing pillars being thrown in the air and being caught.

I have read this book in the original language, French, and now in English. The translation is pretty good. I would recommend it to all readers of all ages due to the humor, cunning, and wit of Asterix and Obelix. The only thing that I didn't like is the paperback cover, which is easily torn. Other than that, this version exposes me to the pyramids of Egypt and the missing nose.

This American translation sucks. Buy this comic series only if the tranlsators are Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge. Else you wont enjoy as much. Otherwise, I would give the entire Asterix series 5 stars!
