Overview

Considered by many to be THE text on asthma, this eagerly awaited revision is a comprehensive update of the previous edition retaining the popular readable style and manageable format of its predecessors. The contents have been expanded to reflect recent advances in the field, with important new chapters on the genetics of asthma, education for both the patient and health professional, and the relationship between asthma and allergy.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Knowledge of asthma has increased substantially since the last edition (1983), particularly in the areas of airway inflammation and reactivity, and in the development of new drugs, new formulations of existing ones, and better delivery systems. This new edition encompasses these developments and continues to provide clinicians with a practical and up-to-date review. Distributed in the US by VNR. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
From The Critics
Reviewer: Daniel A Culver, DO (Cleveland Clinic Foundation)
Description: This is a collection of individual contributions spanning the broad topic of asthma. The previous edition was published in 1992.
Purpose: The book is intended as a subject review of asthma, with an emphasis on the current understanding of the disease and focused practical advice for clinical decision-making. In comparison to the prior editions, there are expanded bibliographic sections and more emphasis on evidence-based medicine. Given the rapid evolution of research in this area, especially in the fields of molecular biology, immunology, and genetics, this represents a needed and timely update to the prior editions.
Audience: This book is intended primarily for clinicians caring for asthmatic patients. It will be most appropriate for practitioners with a focus on pulmonary patients or who routinely see complex asthmatics. The authors generally are established authorities in the areas they cover.
Features: Eighteen chapters cover a range of topics, from molecular biology of asthma to education of patients and healthcare providers. The thrust of most sections centers on discussion of practical, clinical care, with a good degree of analysis regarding the evidentiary basis for various practices. The authors' commentary on their own experiences with various techniques and treatments adds an extra dimension of practical clinical assistance. The accompanying illustrations are generally of high quality, from both a graphic and an instructive standpoint.
Assessment: This book may serve as a valuable resource of practical management for clinicians with an interest in pulmonary disease. For those in training, it would be useful as an educational tool; for established practitioners, it may be a comprehensive yet manageable update in a rapidly-advancing field.
