Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carly Reagan
Meet Astro, the Steller (with an "e —-it's a species, not an adjective) Sea Lion, whose journey from orphaned cub to performing Sea Lion came about through the care of the people at The Marine Mammal Center in California, and through the determination and love that came from Astro himself. After rescuing Astro as a baby and nursing him to health, his friends at The Marine Mammal Center tried to return him to his home in the wild, only to find, time and time again, that Astro would return to shore in search of people. After realizing he would not be happy in the wild, Astro is trained and given a new home at the Long Marine Lab, where he gets to see an perform for adults and children each day. Large and brightly-colored realistic illustrations help tell the charming true story, and the educational value is increased by the back pages of information about Steller Sea Lions, such as their native habitat and life cycle, among other interesting facts. Great to read if learning about sea animals, endangered animals, or just planning a visit to the Long Marine Lab in Mystic, Connecticut, where Astro lives today! Reviewer: Carly Reagan

Gr 3–4—Harvey tells a gentle tale of an orphaned Steller sea lion pup whose early imprinting on his human nurturers at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA, leaves him determinedly reluctant to live in the wild on any terms. Bersani's nearly photographic illustrations keep perfect time with the simple text, showing the pup returning to the center each time he is released. Adults will cheer at the "For Creative Minds" section, replete with activities, maps, further data, and advice on linking with a website for more curriculum-oriented exploration.—Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
