Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Valeria has been an astrologer for 30 years, helping friends and clients with real-life questions regarding job changes, relationships, education, and how to work more effectively with others. She uses astrology to guide others toward knowing themselves better and making decisions to their best advantage. In this self-help book, Valeria describes six stages of decision-making: approaching the problem, questioning, strategizing, negotiating, bonding with others, and building a future. For each stage, she describes the most comfortable direction for each of the 12 zodiacal signs, as well as how to relate optimally to people of all other signs. Valeria's work is ambitious, yet it disappoints. Her practical approach fails because her prescriptions for working with others are overly broad and vague. They appear to apply to anybody in any sign, which will frustrate students of astrology. Not recommended.--Marija Sanderling, Rochester P.L., NH

"Whether it favors him or not, the calendar is man's master." --Fernand Braudel

I have always viewed astrology as a practical tool. Don't get me wrong, I love the mystical and mysterious energy that the cosmos holds for us, but what good does that do us if we cant use it every day of our lives if we want or need to? In my thirty years as an astrologer plus another fifteen years of association with the field before then, I have always searched for the most practical way to apply the ideas of astrology to making everyday choices and decisions. People, hundreds and perhaps thousands of them, come to me because I help them see how they can use astrology to make essential everyday selections: whether or not they should take that job offer, how they should approach that real estate agent, if they should ask somebody out for a date, when to start their fitness program, and so on--issues that feel important to them and that could influence the course of their lives. Helping my clients, friends, and family find their own answers is one of my greatest joys because I see not only how well it works but also how much happier they are when they make carefully plotted decisions.

Most people come to me with questions. I always tell people that the right answers are already within them. To find those answers they just have to learn a little bit about their astrological sign and make the connection to it. By doing so, they can apply the energy of this powerful com-bination to any situation.

Think of an equation like this one: astrology + your choices = a better chance.

One of the things that astrology is about is interpretation. Astrology is a language, and just as no two translators translate the same poem from one language to another in exactly the same way, no two people interpret the message of the stars in exactly the same way. Astrology is about breaking down boundaries, not creating them. Because of that, I decided that words and their cosmic interpretations were the best and easiest way to introduce and connect people to the joys of astrology.

Your choices are the building blocks of life, which I have broken down into six components that can be used in sequence or juggled around. Albert Einstein, a Pisces, said that "life is what man is thinking about all day," so I have chosen the following six words specifically to be the touch-stone of the system of Astrological Intelligence that I call illu-minating your choices. After making my own illuminated choice, I decided that these six words best represent the six stages of decision-making, either for what you are "thinking about all day" or for a larger continuum, such as the arc of our lives that takes us from or through one point to another.

Here are the six stages:

  1. Approaching: whenever you begin something
  2. Questioning: when you find yourself asking
  3. Strategies: when you start devising a plan
  4. Negotiating: when you actually begin relating
  5. Bonding: when you make the connection
  6. Building: when you start thinking about tomor-rows

You were born with a very special password that allows you to jump right into this unique system: your sun sign, or astrological sign, which is determined by the day you were born. We all have one, so no one is excluded from being able to give this a try. Every one of us is either an Aries, a Taurus, a Gemini, a Cancer, a Leo, a Virgo, a Libra, a Scorpio, a Sagittarius, a Capricorn, an Aquarius, or a Pisces. (You may already know your sign, but if you don't, not to worry: I will show you how to determine your sign and any-one else's a little later.) The wonderful, complex, rich mythology and history of each sign has been woven into the texture of this book. By using Astrological Intelligence you will get comfortable with your sign, so you can make it part of your identity, almost like an alternative name, as you go out into the world and relate to everything and everyone around you. Whether you make snap judgments (as Aries tends to do) or plot out hundreds of choices on a spreadsheet and ponder the various possibilities for months (a common Taurus trait), you still move through at least part of the process at one time or another. Each astrological sign has a unique way of relating to these six stages through words of his or her own, as I will show you. I know that everyone can benefit from this relationship. If you use this system, your decisions will always be given a boost in the right direction. The best way to find out that the system works is to try it for yourself and give it a chance. Just the other day, the lovely daughter of a friend looked up the combination of Pisces and Leo in the "Bonding" section. The advice for Pisces was to get Leo to believe in something that she had not created. "That's exactly what I have been trying to do and it hasn't been working!" she said, in an almost accusing tone. I made her keep on reading, and she realized that the advice that she should let the Leo, who happened to be her mother, shove her around a bit could fit into her lovely Piscean scheme if she gave it a chance.

I am fully aware of the ongoing debate between those who believe and those who do not believe in some kind of message from the stars. Your decision to pick up this book would seem to indicate that your heart and mind are at least somewhat open to the possibility of accepting the fact that there is something to astrology. You are far from alone, by the way, because forty million other Americans believe the same thing. Whether you are already a devotee, a Curious George, or a complete nonbeliever, take a chance, pick a word, and open the door to amazing possibilities.
