More About This Book

Overview

Astronomy: The Definitive Guide is the perfect handbook for all who are interested in our place in the universe. Prepared under the direction of consultant editor Robert Burnham, the guide includes hundreds of photographs, illustrations, and sky maps that bring to life the intriguing subject of astronomy.

The guide is divided into two sections. The first, "Discovering the Universe", explains our changing understanding of earth's place in the universe and provides an up-to-the-minute guide to astronomy today. It describes the main celestial bodies and explores the big questions raised by our evolving understanding of the universe. Also included is advice on selecting the most appropriate equipment for skywatching and tips on becoming a successful viewer.

The second section, "A Guide to Celestial Objects", is a field guide to the night sky. It includes hundreds of maps and photographs, with sections on the sun, moon and planets, stars, nebulas and galaxies, as well as monthly star charts and sky tours of both northern and southern hemispheres.

"Ten years from now, I expect many professional and amateur astronomers to trace their passion for the field back to this book."

Scandalous that this outstanding book has not been reprinted!

This marvelous book is truly the best astronomy guide I've encountered in a lengthy teaching and stargazing career. Not only the best general introduction to the history, science, practice and deep fun of astronomy, but also a wonder of the book-maker's art. A beautiful, compact, durable and permanently valuable creation -- which is also inexpensive, and therefore available to a large audience! I, too, gave away many to friends. And yes, it should be the standard first astronomy text in every classroom. And yes, thanks to you, Barnes and Noble, for publishing it. But why have you not kept this irreplaceable book in print? Please work your publishing magic to let us buy more of them!

    Best Astronomy Book Ever

I've bought seven copies of this book over the past year and given all but one away. This is the best astronomy guide I've ever seen. Fabulous sky tours to take by hand-held binoculars or telescope, fabulous sky charts by month for both Northern and Southern hemispheres. Delicate drawings, superb photos. Perfectly pitched for every reader. Should be the standard first astronomy textbook in every classroom. Ultimately, very inspiring. THANK YOU, Barnes and Noble, for publishing this title!

    Simply amazing and beautiful book

This book is just amazing. Its great for amatuer and professional star gazers alike. Has great facts, and gets straight to the point. I love the star maps that it offers. It taught me how to read star maps and how to use my telescope properly to see the stars. I recommend this book to everyone who loves the stars and everything in the galaxy. Detailed information and jam packed of full color images of stars, planets, and celestial objects would amaze everyone who picks this book up. It is the best $13 I've ever spent. Thanks Barnes and Noble, this book was invaluable to my star gazing experience.

I can't put this book down!

The layout is simply stunning, but it's not just a pretty book. If you are new to astronomy, this book could be your single best resource for many years to come. Somehow, the book provides very comprehensive information without becoming too verbose or too bulky. The monthly star charts and tours of the sky are especially useful. It's small and rugged enough to fit in your field pack, yet it's attracive enough to sit on your coffee table.

'Astronomy compels the soul to look upward and leads us from this world to another.' - Plato

I've just purchased this book today, and I find myself not wanting to put it down. The title says it all. This book is very informational; a guide, with a touch of quotes. Beautiful imagery. An escape of this world to another. If you are new to gazing, or just a wonderer, I suggest you pick up this book.
