Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Jake and Carolyn Donovan head the FBI's list of the "Ten Most Wanted" for a crime they didn't commit. For 14 years they have lived under assumed names, moving to new towns when necessary. Jake gets caught in an FBI drug bust and is released but not before his fingerprints have been taken. By the time the FBI makes the connection, Jake, Carolyn, and their son have activated their escape plan. This time they mean to prove their innocence. To do that they return to the scene of the crime, only one small step ahead of the FBI agent now on the case. Why was the investigation dropped? Who had the power to set them up? What part does the ubiquitous Mr. Wiggins play? Well read by Philip Bosco, this story is a real potboiler until the implausible conclusion. Recommended.--Joanna M. Burkhardt, Univ. of Rhode Island, Coll. of Continuing Education Lib., Providence
Kirkus Reviews
Mr. and Mrs. Middle America take it on the lam from an army of law enforcers when a routine check reveals that they're high on the Most Wanted list. Fifteen years ago, newlyweds Jake and Carolyn Donovan worked for Enviro-Kleen, a firm whose scrubbing of a gas-laden army ammunition plant touched off what came to be known throughout the nation as the Newark Incident, a catastrophe that left all 16 of their co-workers dead and hundreds of square miles of the Arkansas countryside contaminated with radioactive waste. The sole survivors, the Donovans, were promptly branded ecoterrorists responsible for the holocaust, and promoted to the top of the FBI's dance card. Only the money and help provided by the one-man Witness Protection Program run by Carolyn's uncle, ruthless Chicago developer Harry Sinclair, allowed them to escape the feds and reemerge as Jake and Carolyn Brighton. Now, as they hustle their dazed son Travis, 13, out of his school and off to the storage locker they've had stocked with food and weapons and transport and new identity papers, they insist to the boy that they never did anything wrong; every scrap of evidence against them was planted. By now, readers of Gilstrap's sizzling debut novel, Nathan's Run (1996), will have realized that he's recycled the same plot—the innocent on the run from massive, untrustworthy forces of authority—but pumped everything up (beginning by substituting an entire family for the solitary child) by making it bigger, faster, noisier, and longer. Especially longer. Before they've finally vindicated themselves—not a big surprise, since in scene after scene everybody gets shot but them—Jake and Carolyn have tracked the NewarkIncident to the very highest levels of the government, and Gilstrap has ingeniously twisted his simple premise six ways from Sunday. Does for families what Nathan's Run did for preteens—puts them through endless rounds of entertainingly action-packed pursuit. (Film rights to Arnold Kopelson)

    Another Gilstrap page turner

Like all John Gilstrap books, At All Costs grabs you from page one and doesn't let go. In the opening chapter, the reader is thrust into the lives of Jake and Carolyn; normal everyday people with normal everyday jobs, a son and a home, until one incident sends them fleeing for their lives, on the run from the police and FBI. By chapter two, we find out the couple hold the number one spot on the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted list. They have been in hiding for the last 12 years and don't intend to give that up now.
Enter Irene Rivers from the Jonathan Graves series. As FBI agent in charge of bringing Jake and Carolyn in, she must not only save her reputation by capturing Jake and Carolyn, but unravel the question of if they are really guilty.
As a huge fan of John Gilstrap, I was thrilled to read the story of how Irene Rivers got to the top of the FBI. This is a woman who demands her own series. She is tough, capable, smart and tender all at the same time. I'd love to read more of her story.
If you are a Gilstrap fan, you will love At All Costs. If not, you will be after reading this.

Fantastic Book! Best suspense I've read in a long time.

I love this author! The characters are well developed and realistic, logical thinking throughout. The ingenuity the characters utilized in the book was sheer genius.

I couldn't put this down until the end! Quite a testament to this author. I will definitely buy more books by him.

    Thanks for a great read!

READ THIS BOOK AT ALL COSTS

This was the first John Gilstrap novel I have read, and I was glad that I picked this one up. The story is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride from page 1. The Donovans are like any American family, and it's scary to think of these consequences happening to anyone. But it's this concept that Gilstrap uses to write a magnificent story. There are many dangers and twists in the story to hold everyone's interest. I recommend this book for everyone that wants to read a well written exciting story. I'll definitely keep Gilstrap on my 'To Read' list.

Can't get enough John Gilstrap.  I've read all in his Jonathan G

Can't get enough John Gilstrap.  I've read all in his Jonathan Grave series & while waiting for next release of Soft Targets (Oct 1st), bought At All Costs.  Gilstrap never disappoints!  Can't put any of his books down. Each book has you reading faster & faster to find out what happens next. Thrilling, to say the least. My favorite author. Gilstrap will become your favorite too, if he isn't already.

    Suspense "by the gallon" !

Although the author is guilty of adding "filler" and repeating to fill pages, his plots are well worth a little tidium.

    Couldn't fall asleep!

I made the mistake of staying up late one night because I only had about 100 pages to read. Well, this book is so exciting I ended up staying up until 1:00 am to finish it. Then I couldn't fall asleep, I was so worked up by the ending. One of my favorite authors, Gilstrap's At All Costs will keep you not only on the edge of your seat, but on the edge of your bed trying to fall asleep after reading it. Read this book, at all costs!

    Great Book

Once I got into the book, I found it hard to put it down. Remined me of John Grisham books. Good story line.

    Gilstrap has done better

I liked the story, but too many dependencies on luck and chance, as well as a mysterious rich uncle. No Mercy was incredible and i look forward to more Digger Graves.

    This Book Delivers

I found myself unable to put this riveting book out of either my mind or hands. Twists and turns were many while the plot stayed within the bounds of possibility. A winner from start to finish!
