Overview

Mack Stevens' brand of Texas rockabilly finally meets up with Rockin' Ronny Weiser, the production head of Rollin' Rock Records, the retro rockabilly label from the 1970s that formed one of the seminal influences on his sound and style. Stevens has always held power aplenty, but has often been jakelegged by the lo-fi production on his records for other labels. Here Weiser surrounds him with a band that cooks and a sound that's big, fat and echoed up just right. Highlights include nice duets with slap bassist Mary Ek on "Don't Start a War Daddy" and "Rockabilly Romance," well executed covers of Nat Couty's "Woodpecker Rock," Ralph Nielsen's "The Scream" and Hal Harris' "Lonely," and Stevens originals like "Hepcat Heaven," "Only the Good Die Young," "Diet Pill Boogie," "It's Armageddon Time" and the title track. This makes for Stevens' strongest outing yet.

Like I said above, Mack Stevens is awfully good. He's good at singing this stripped down rockabilly music. He's good at aligning himself with talented folks like Ronny Weiser of Rollin' Rock Records and the backing musicians heard on this CD. Find out just how good he is. Buy this.

Mack's live shows are always crazy. And now I've got that crazy Mack living in my CD collection, thanks to the Rollin' Rock label. Texas-sized rockabilly!

If you are looking for rockabilly -- that energetic blend of old r&b with hillbilly -- then look no more. Buy this Mack Stevens CD and you've got yourself some solid rockabilly. How much should you expect to enjoy 'Woodpecker Rock'? A wholeheckuva lot.

I know very little about this Mack Stevens. I took a chance and ordered AT ROLLIN' ROCK: LAS VEGAS STOMP. I'm glad I took that risk because this is fun.

This Mack Stevens character is one untamed son of a gun. Don't confuse the Mack Stevens form of rockabilly music with any of that stuff from the early 80s that slipped into the pop music charts and MTV. You won't catch Mack wearing eye makeup and prancing around singing ''oldies'' music. This CD is not the soundtrack to ''Happy Days.'' So what is it then? Just real, rootsy, authentic, sizzling rockabilly music played with the same kind of energy that guys like Johnny Jano and Benny Joy had.

This Mack Stevens CD marked the beginning of a special relationship: Mack partnering up with Ronny Weiser of Rollin' Rock Records. After this record, Mack and Ronny got togethr for HARDCORE TEXAS CAT MUSIC and TEXAS HEAT. The good news just keeps getting better: at the end of 2000, Mack returns to Ronny's Las Vegas studio to record a fourth record. Rumor has it Mack has some excellent material worked up. Hopefully our pals here at www.bn.com will carry the new release in '01.

Hot dog! This is a scorcher from Mack Stevens, The Corsicana Wild Man. Be prepared for nutty lyrics. Be prepared for deep, dark guitar from Big Al. Be prepared for slap bass and banging snare. Be prepared to love this CD and find yourself chasing after Mack's other releases (a total of three CDs on Rollin' Rock, plus other titles on Freedonia, On The Hill, etc.)
